  2.                                            Product Information for Messaging CONNECT

To support enterprise-wide messaging between NetWare MHS users and IBM mainframe and mid-range users, Novell provides the NetWare Messaging CONNECT product.  It is a cooperative application that has software modules on the NetWare network and IBM MVS mainframe.  These modules allow message exchange between MHS users and users of IBM PROFS and DISOSS office systems.

NetWare Messaging CONNECT extends the messaging backbone service of NetWare MHS to include IBM SNA networks and IBM mainframe and mid-range messaging products such as IBM's OfficeVision product family, Personal Services products (PS/CICS), DISOSS, PROFS and other SNADS-compatible systems.  CONNECT allows users of MHS-compatible or SMF-native applications to communicate with users of messaging applications on IBM mainframes.  Existing SNA networks can support message traffic between remote network sites where WAN connectivity is not available.

NetWare Messaging CONNECT includes both CONNECT/LAN and CONNECT/MVS components.  The CONNECT/LAN component can run as a gateway on a DOS workstation with the MHS Connectivity Manager.  CONNECT/LAN translates and converts electronic mail messages from the NetWare SMF to the CONNECT/LAN parcel structure that can be exchanged with the IBM mainframe components of CONNECT/MVS.  Messages are routed between NetWare MHS and CONNECT/LAN by mapping MHS workgroups to CONNECT routes.

  10. CONNECT/MVS is a set of CICS and batch applications that link  MHS-compatible applications with mainframe-based distribution systems.  Messages are  routed between DISOSS or PROFS and one or more CONNECT/LAN systems.  Text data is automatically converted into mainframe format.

CONNECT/MVS includes SNADS support and uses an SNA LU6.2 session to connect with DISOSS or SNADS Distribution Service Units (DSUs).  It also includes PROFS support and connects with one or more PROFS nodes via a network link between MVS/JES and VM/RSCS.  In addition, JES batch applications provide a mechanism for mainframe applications to download and  distribute reports or text data to a network user or MHS-based application.
