VREPAIR (BETA) INSTRUCTIONS
BEFORE USING VREPAIR MAKE A COMPLETE BACK-UP OF THE FILE SERVER!
This program is provided on an "as is" basis. Novell assumes NO liability
arising from the use of this product. The are four versions of VREPAIR and
they must be used only for the correct configurations. They are as
follows:
VREPAIR.I For 68 and 68B servers only
VREPAIR2.EXE For all servers running Advanced NetWare/286
VREPAIR.EXE For all servers running Advanced NetWare/86
VREPAIRF.EXE For all servers running SFT NetWare/286 Level I and ELS I
Select the version for your server. All ".EXE" version may be executed from
DOS after taking the server down and re-booting it under DOS. The 68000
verison or ".I" version must be loaded in the same manner as "SYSGEN.I" or
any of the ".I" files are loaded. This means that you must have a copy of
"VREPAIR.I" and "LOAD.EXE" on the same diskette. Follow the procedure in
your 68 installation manual for loading "SYSGEN.I" only replace "SYSGEN.I"
with "VREPAIR.I."
VREPAIR is an Advanced NetWare utility. Do NOT use VREPAIR on NetWare
versions prior to Advanced NetWare. (This means it cannot be used with
NetWare 4.61 and prior releases.)
VREPAIR is used to recover data from a volume on a file server after
incorrect data has been written to that volume. This bad data is created
on the volume by defective media or by improperly "downing" the file
server. The file server can be improperly downed by turning off the file
server or the file server losing power before issuing the DOWN command on
the console.
To run VREPAIR your file server must be downed. Boot the server under DOS
and execute VREPAIR.
VREPAIR will come up listing the drives attached to the file server.
Select the drive that contains the volume(s) to be fixed. Next you will be
presented with a list of volumes on that drive. Select the volume that
will be repaired.
VREPAIR has three different options. These options are selected with a
series of questions. Each questions and a brief explanation is listed
below.
Do you want a printed report of any errors or corrections made [Yes or No]
?
When VREPAIR discovers an error, it will present information about the
error and the manner in which VREPAIR will attempt to fix it. This
information will either be sent directly to Network Printer 0 or displayed
on the screen.
Do you want to test for Bad Blocks [Yes or No] ?
VREPAIR will check all the data blocks on the disk surface to determine if
any are bad. If it encounters a bad data block, it will attempt to write
the information to another block on the disk and add the bad block to the
bad block table.
Do you want to recover lost blocks as files [Yes or No] ?
In the process of checking files on the file server, VREPAIR may encounter
blocks that aren't connected to any valid file name. If you wish these
data blocks to be saved as files select Yes, otherwise VREPAIR will free up
the blocks for use with other files. The files will be saved in the root
directory of the volume that is being checked.
You are then asked to confirm your selection of the various options. Once
you have verified that the options are correct, VREPAIR will begin checking
the volume.
During this time, the screen will display VREPAIR's progress. Once it has
completed the process, you will be asked to verify the corrections.
The VREPAIR process may take up to two hours, depending on the amount and
nature of the errors that need to be fixed.
* * * W A R N I N G * * *
Because of the nature of the changes and fixes made by VREPAIR, back-up the
entire file server before you execute VREPAIR. VREPAIR is a utility
program for use with Advanced NetWare only. Since VREPAIR is designed to
work only with Advanced NetWare, additional problems will be created if it
is used on any earlier release of NetWare. For this reason, DO NOT USE
VREPAIR on any NetWare release prior to Advanced NetWare!
