SYMPTOM
Users must dial directly into the Global MHS server for mail transfers.
SOLUTION
Apply RSYNC.EXE to NetWare Remote MHS 2.0 installation.
NetWare MHS Remote Node Utility (RSYNC) is a DOS executable designed to
allow a NetWare Remote MHS 2.0 (RMHS) user who has installed RMHS using
the "Part-time Remote User" mode to take advantage of a remote-node
connection to the network to facilitate the exchange of messages. The
remote-node connection is utilized instead of dialing directly into the
Global MHS server for mail transfers. Remote-node connections are
provided by NetWare Connect 1.0.33 or greater.

Installation Instructions:
To install RSYNC, you will require the following:
■ NetWare Remote MHS 2.0 installed in part-time user mode
■ NetWare Connect 1.0.33 or greater
To install RSYNC, do the following steps
1. Install NetWare Remote MHS 2.0 in part-time user mode including
application software and default connectivity settings.
Make sure the "Net MHS Tree" field is properly configured according
to the RMHS documentation. It should point to the MHS tree on the
file server (for example, f:\mhs).
2. Copy RSYNC.EXE and the new MHS.MSG file into your MHS\EXE directory.
3. Make sure MV is set to the MHS tree on your local drive, or remove
the MV setting by executing the following DOS command:
SET MV=
4. Execute RSYNC with desired optional command-line parameters.
As an added convenience, RSYNC can be executed from a NetWare Login
Script by using the following statement:
'#[d:path]\RSYNC
where [d:path] is replaced by the path to the location of RSYNC on the
local hard disk. Adding this statement will cause RSYNC to be executed
each time the user logs into the network.
-----------------------------------------------------------
CONFIGURING RSYNC
-----------------------------------------------------------
RSYNC configuration is performed by using the RSETUP program that is
supplied by NetWare Remote MHS 2.0. The RMHS configuration parameters
used by RSYNC are the following:
■ Net MHS Tree
■ Threshold
■ Application Information
■ User Information
In its default (no parameters) mode, RSYNC works like RMHS in providing
mail transfer services. It transfers messages created by your messaging
application to the server and transfers messages waiting for you on the
server to your own PC. The network path is used to specify your home
mail server. This field is specified using RSETUP.
RSYNC also has some synchronization options for use when the laptop is
reconnected to the network. The following options are the same as those
for RMHS:
-E
■ This parameter allows part-time remote users to synchronize the MHS
directory extract files.
■ To synchronize the SMF-NS.XRT, extract file using -E.
■ Note: This parameter is dependent on the value of the "Net MHS
Tree" field on the RSETUP Configuration Setup screen. If your
network mail path is changed by your administrator, you must run
RSETUP to modify the "Net MHS Tree" field to reflect this change.
■ Following the extract file synchronization process, RSYNC will
continue with its normal processing (uploading messages if -Y is
also used or downloading messages if no other option is specified).
■ Novell recommends that you perform an "RSYNC -E" before
disconnecting the workstation from the network for remote use. This
ensures that the extract files are up to date before going remote.
-Y
■ This option signals RSYNC to upload messages sent since the last
time you connected to the server. This prevents messages from
getting stuck on your PC until the next time you disconnect from the
network.
■ Novell recommends that you perform an "RSYNC -Y" immediately after
reconnecting your workstation to the network (that is, when
switching from Remote to Network mode).
This is best achieved by placing the following line in your NetWare
Login script:
#[d:path]\RSYNC -Y
Note:[d:path] is replaced by the path to the location of RSYNC on
the local hard disk. Adding this RSYNC also supports the following
command line settings:
-Tnnnn
This option overrides the size threshold you configured with RSETUP.
Messages greater than the size (in KB) you specify here, will remain
on your MHS server. If you enter 0, all messages are accepted.
-S
■ This option specifies that you will send mail only, rather than
sending and receiving mail.
-Vn
■ This option indicates the level of information that will be reported
to the log file. Enter a number from 0 to 9, with 9 being the most
information. This is useful when troubleshooting problems. These
messages are sent to RMHS.LOG as message #0.
-Q[2]
■ This option will run RSYNC in quiet mode or silent mode. Use -Q to
run RSYNC in quiet mode. In quiet mode, RSYNC displays on error
messages to the screen. Use -Q2 to run RSYNC in silent mode. In
silent mode, RSYNC does not display any information to the screen.
-Ffilename
■ This option indicates the name of the ASCII file you have created
which includes any valid command-line parameters.
-M["dos path to MHS directory tree"]
■ This parameter overrides the DOS MV environment variable. This
option must be used when running RMHS.EXE from a directory other
than MHS\EXE.
Example: RSYNC -M"c:\apps"
where the MHS tree is located at c:\apps\mhs.
Solution Specifics:
Uncorrected Features and General Restrictions
The following lists features, with operational anomalies, that could not
be corrected before this release of the software and general restrictions
of which you need to be aware:
■ The RSYNC utility supports partial message recovery. For mail
transfers that terminated prematurely, this feature allows the
aborted transfer to resume at the point of termination.
When this situation arises, the remote workstation may retain
temporary files in the MHS directory tree. These files will
generally have a ".$$$" or ".PAR" file extension and are used by
RSYNC to resume the message transfer during the next session.
Due to network server security, message uploads to the MHS server's
SND directory can only be recovered to the last file transferred,
while message downloads to the user's remote mailbox can be
recovered to the byte.
Repeated message upload failures can leave "orphaned" attachments in
the MHS\MAIL\PARCEL directory. Your administrator should remove
files in this directory that do not correspond to a message file in
the MHS\MAIL\SND directory.
Interrupted message uploads (due to pressing the <Esc> key or loss
of communication) during the final message copying phase can cause
.BAD messages to be generated in the SND directory by the MHS
server. The MHS server will generate undeliverable notification
messages to the administrator or postmaster. These .BAD messages
can be identified by a <lf> character (ASCII - 0A hex) in the very
first byte of the message.
■ When using RSYNC with NetWare Connect, some abnormal connection
termination's can occur when modem speeds are set higher than 19,200
BPS. This may be due to characters being lost at higher modem
speeds. In this case, try selecting a lower modem speed to reduce
the possibility of any character loss.
Please note that no performance penalty occurs in using a 19,200 BPS
port speed with modems which support carrier speeds less than or
equal to 14,400 BPS.
Using RSYNC with NetWare Connect
When using RSYNC utility with NetWare Connect, some abnormal
connection termination's can occur when modem speeds are set higher
than 19,200 BPS. This may be due to characters being lost at higher
modem speeds. In this case, try selecting a lower modem speed to
reduce the possibility of any character loss.
It should be noted that there is no performance penalty in using a
19,200 BPS port speed with modems that support carrier speeds less
than or equal to 14,400 BPS.
When using RSYNC with NetWare Connect's Software Compression
feature, abnormal connection termination's can sometimes occur. If
you experience abnormal connection terminations, disable the
Software Compression feature using the following steps:
1. Load the LSL and NRN device drivers.
2. Run DIALCON utility.
3. Select the "Configure Port" operation.
4. Press <Enter> twice to select default path for NET.CFG.
5. Select your serial driver in the "Configure Driver" screen.
6. Using arrow keys, move to the "Software Compression" field.
7. Press <Enter> and select the "Disabled" setting.
8. Press <Esc> and select "Yes" to save the new configuration.
9. Press <Alt>+<F10> to exit the DIALCON utility.
10. Unload NRN using the "NRN u" command.
The new configuration takes effect next time you load "NRN."
