Baud rate is a measure of the speed at which data is transmitted over a serial interface. It is equal to the number of bits (including non-data bits) transmitted each second. In most cases, the maximum data rate in bytes per second is roughly the baud rate divided by 10.
If this setting does not match that of the printer, there will be no output or garbage.
Supported values are 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, and 9600 baud.
The number of data bits needed for each character depends on the type of data being sent. Standard ASCII has 128 characters, requiring at least 7 data bits for proper transmission. Extended character sets and graphics data usually require 8 data bits.
If this setting does not match that of the printer, transmission errors are likely.
Valid settings include 5, 6, 7, or 8 data bits.
Choose Yes to exit without loading RPRINTER.EXE or choose No to return to the list of active print servers.
If the Interrupt ReQuest number does not match the actual port configuration, output may be VERY slow and other hardware may also fail.
Common configurations are:
LPT1: - IRQ 7 COM1: - IRQ 4
LPT2: - IRQ 5 COM2: - IRQ 3
LPT3: - IRQ 5 COM3: - IRQ 3
COM3: - IRQ 3
(NOTE: RPRINTER can only use unique interrupts)
The interrupt specification is overridden to NONE (polled mode) by the -P command line flag.
This screen is used to configure a printer that was defined as Remote Other. Press the ESC key when the configuration is complete.
Select a field to edit it. Help is available for each field while it is being edited.
The defaults of LPT1: and IRQ 7 often suffice.
If a serial port is selected, the baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity, and Xon/Xoff usage specification fields will be active.
Stop bits specifies the (minimum) number of stop bits trailing each transmitted character.
Most printers will work with stop bits set to 1, but some older and slower printers, like teletypes, may require more.
1.5 stop bits is only allowed with 5 data bits, which must be selected first.
Parity is a method of checking for errors in the transmitted data.
If this setting does not match that of the printer, transmission errors may occur.
If NONE is selected, no parity bits are used.
If EVEN or ODD is selected, one parity bit is added to each character, set to make the total number of on bits even or odd. The printer parity setting causes it to check this bit.
X-ON/X-OFF is a flow control method used by the printer to tell RPRINTER when data can be accepted and when data must not be sent.
When X-ON/X-OFF in enabled, the printer must *send* X-ON(ctrl-Q) and X-OFF(ctrl-S) characters to start and stop the data flow.
WHen X-ON/X-OFF is disabled, the printer must toggle the CTS line in the serial cable.
If this setting does not match that of the printer, whole sections of data may be lost.
RPRINTER allows a printer at a workstation to be used as a remote network printer. There must a running print server with a printer defined as 'remote' that is currently 'not connected'.
This list contains only print servers that are both defined and currently running. Selecting a print server will display a list of the unconnected printers available on that print server. In case the desired printer is not in that list, pressing the ESC key will return to this list.
This list displays the printers defined for this print server that were defined as 'Remote' and that are currently 'not connected'.
Selecting a printer that was defined as Remote Parallel or Remote Serial completes the installation. A printer that was defined as Remote Other will be configured first.
If the desired printer is not shown, it may be undefined or already connected. Press the ESC key to return to the print server list.
This is the port type and number to which the cable from the printer is connected.
Parallel port LPT1: is the most commonly used.
Parallel ports LPT1: thru LPT3: are supported.
Serial ports COM1 thru COM4: are supported.
If a serial port is selected, the baud rate, data bits, stop bits, parity, and X-ON/X-OFF usage fields on the configuration screen will be filled in and may then be edited.
