  486. Installation Instructions:
  487.  
  488. 1. Backup your current NetWare/IP client files.
  489.  
  490.  2. Make backup copies of your STARTNET.BAT and NET.CFG (located
  491. in C:\NWCLIENT by default).  After you install the new VLMs, you
  492. can then restore the STARTNET.BAT and NET.CFG files using these
  493. backup files.  If you do not backup these files, you can still
  494. restore them using the STARTNET.BNW and NET.BNW which are created
  495. by the NetWare/IP Client installation program.
  496.  
  497.  3. Unzip NIPW21.EXE onto an empty directory or your
  498. workstation's hard drive.
  499.  
  500.  3. Do not proceed until you have updated your NetWare 4.1
  501. servers with NetWare/IP 2.1 and, updated your NetWare 3.12 and
  502. 4.02 servers with NIP318.EXE.
  503.  
  504.  4. At the directory holding the NIPW21 files type INSTALL
  505. <enter>
  506.  
  507.  NOTE: By default, the client will use the NetWare/IP
  508. configuration as found in NET.CFG in the C:\NWCLIENT directory. 
  509. A sample file named NWIPCFG is in WSDOS_1.
  510.  
  511.  NOTE: If your existing LAN WorkPlace contains newer TCP/IP
  512. software than the NIPW21, the NetWare/IP installation program
  513. will ask you whether it should overwrite the existing software. 
  514. You should select "NO" so that the newer TCP/IP software is
  515. maintained on your system.
  516.  
  517.  NOTE: If you install NIPW21 on a workstation that already
  518. contains LAN WorkPlace 4.2 or earlier, merge the contents of the
  519. existing LANWP.BAT with the STARTNET.BAT, created by the
  520. NetWare/IP installation.
  521.  
  522.  5. At one point the client installation procedure will prompt
  523. you to select a driver for your network board.  If you already
  524. have a driver loaded to memory, the installation program
  525. automatically detects the driver.  If you do not have a driver
  526. loaded to memory, the installation program will display a list of
  527. network boards.
  528.  
  529.  6. After selecting or confirming the correct network board, you
  530. must also ensure that you specified a frame type that is
  531. compatible with TCP/IP.  For more information on compatible frame
  532. types, see "Configuring Other Frame Types" in Chapter 4 of the
  533. NetWare/IP Client Guide.
  534.  
  535.  To select or confirm the frame type, complete the following
  536. steps before you exit the client installation form:
  537.  
  538.  -- A. Highlight the network driver listed under Step 5 of the
  539. installation form and press <Enter>.
  540.  
  541.  -- B. Press <Enter> to select the specified driver from the
  542. list.
  543.  
  544.  -- C. Pressing <enter> on the specified driver again, displays
  545. the selected frame type.  If it is TCP/IP compatible, use <Esc>
  546. to exit to the main installation form.  If the specified frame
  547. type is not TCP/IP compatible, select the frame type field.  (For
  548. example, for an ethernet network, select Ethernet_II.)
  549.  
  550.  7. Press <Esc> to exit to the main installation form.
  551.  NOTE: You can insure (after installation) that the NetWare/IP
  552. client install program did configure the clients NET.CFG for the
  553. correct frame support.  For example, if it is Ethernet II, please
  554. check NET.CFG for the Ethernet_II frame type support for the
  555. NetWare/IP client.  If NetWare/IP client software is installed on
  556. C:, the NET.CFG file is found in the C:\NWCLIENT directory.
  557.  
  558.  8. Please go to the main screen.
  559.  
  560.  9. If you want your client users to configure the Tunable
  561. parameters, you should add the parameters to the Client
  562. Worksheet.
  563.  The client users should configure the Tunable parameters during
  564. installation as follows:
  565.  From the NetWare/IP Client Install highlight "Select Tunable
  566. Parameters" in Step 8.
  567.  
  568.  The NetWare/IP Tunable Parameters screen will appear.

  587.  Nearest NWIP Server Parameter
  588.  =============================
  589.  If your NetWare/IP network contains both 1.1 and 2.1 servers,
  590. use the following guidelines when adding values for the Nearest
  591. Server parameter in your client workstation's NET.CFG:
  592.  
  593.  A. To specify a NetWare/IP 2.1 server in the client's nearest
  594. server listing, you can use the server's IP address, hostname, or
  595. subnetwork address.
  596.  
  597.  B. To specify a NetWare/IP 1.1 server in the client's nearest
  598. server listing, use the server's subnetwork address.
  599.  
  600.  Setting the Retry Time Parameters
  601.  =================================
  602.  You can configure the following optional parameters on the
  603. NetWare/IP client and NetWare/IP server to indicate the amount of
  604. time between attempts to retry contacting a DSS server at
  605. startup.
  606.  
  607.  - AUTORETRIES, which specifies the number of times to retry.
  608.  The default is 1. The range is 1 through 10.
  609.  
  610.  - AUTORETRY_SECS, which specifies the number of seconds between
  611. retries. The default is 10. The range is 5 through 60.
  612.  
  613.  If you specify a value for these parameters that is not in the
  614. valid range, the NetWare/IP server uses the default value.
  615.  
  616.  To configure these parameters on a NetWare/IP client, edit the
  617. NWIP section of the NET.CFG file in the C:\NWCLIENT directory.
  618. For example:
  619.  
  620.    AUTORETRIES     3
  621.    AUTORETRY_SECS  4
  622.  
  623.  In this example, a NetWare/IP node re-issues DNS queries (such
  624. as NS and SOA queries) if it cannot communicate with either the
  625. DNS or DSS server. The NetWare/IP node retries three times and
  626. waits at four second intervals
  627.  between each retry before giving up.
  628.  
  629.  Setting the NSQ Broadcast parameter
  630.  ===================================
  631.  You can configure the NSQ_BROADCAST parameters on the NetWare/IP
  632. client to indicate if the client will attempt to contact any of
  633. the nearest NWIP servers using broadcast.
  634.  
  635.  To configure the parameter, edit the NWIP section of the NET.CFG
  636. in the C:\NWCLIENT directory. 
  637.  For example:  NSQ_BROADCAST   ON
  638.  
  639.  If it is set to ON (default value), the client will not attempt
  640. to contact any of the nearest NWIP servers using broadcast until
  641. it is invoked by a specific Nearest Server Request (e.g. when VLM
  642. loads)or other SAP/RIP requests. 
  643.  
  644.  If it is set to OFF, the client will attempt to contact each of
  645. the nearest NWIP servers at "load" time -- when NWIP.EXE is
  646. initialized.  In both cases, the client will store the found NWIP
  647. servers in its cache for future references.
  648.  
  649.  Improving Communication Parameters
  650.  ==================================
  651.  You can configure the NetWare/IP client to improve its
  652. communication with both the DSS servers and NetWare/IP server.
  653.  
  654.  The preferred DSS parameter specifies the desirable DSS servers
  655. for the client and server to locate. 
  656.  When you configure a Preferred DSS parameter on either a client
  657. or a server, you must specify a hostname, an IP address, or a
  658. partial IP address.
  659.  The specified IP address can represent a subnetwork address or
  660. an IP address matching pattern.  You can specify up to five
  661. preferences per parameter.
  662.  
  663.  For information on specifying a subnetwork or IP address, see
  664. the "Physical Addresses and Internet Addresses" section of
  665. Appendix B, "TCP/IP Protocol Suite" in the "TCP/IP Transport
  666. Supervisor's Guide."
  667.  
  668.  To improve the NetWare/IP client's communication, you can
  669. configure the following two optional parameters:
  670.  
  671.  - Preferred DSS parameter, which specifies the desirable DSS
  672. servers for the client to locate.
  673.  
  674.  - Nearest NetWare/IP server, which specifies the NetWare/IP
  675. servers with the closest route to the client. Using this
  676. parameter, a NetWare/IP client can rely on the closest NetWare/IP
  677. server to resolve subsequent queries. This parameter can directly
  678. improve the response time for some IPX applications that use the
  679. General SAP query (for example, RCONSOLE).  Specify this
  680. parameter only on the client.
  681.  
  682.  If NetWare/IP is already installed on the client, you must edit
  683. the C:\NWCLIENT\NET.CFG file and add the parameters under the
  684. NWIP section. For example:
  685.

  690.  Optimizing NetWare/IP for WAN Environments
  691.  ==========================================
  692.  To optimize a NetWare IPX client that occasionally times out or
  693. gets disconnected while accessing remote servers, you can
  694. configure the Ticks Between Nodes Tunable parameters.  These
  695. parameters specify the approximate one-way time for a packet to
  696. travel, in ticks, between two NetWare/IP nodes on the same IP
  697. subnetwork, same IP network, and different IP networks.  A tick
  698. equals 1/18th second.
  699.  
  700.  To configure these parameters use the UNICON utility. 
  701.  At the UNICON utility's Main Menu, select the following:
  702.  
  703.  -> Manage Services
  704.  ----> NetWare/IP
  705.  -------> Configure Primary DDS

  726. sufficient. You can estimate the time for a packet to travel
  727. between nodes on the same subnetwork, same network, and different
  728. networks, by using the NetWare PING utility.

  730.  If modifying the Ticks Between Nodes Tunable parameters does not
  731. completely solve your timeout problems, you can configure the
  732. NetWare/IP servers for host/networks across slow WAN links from
  733. which they send and receive packets.  ou should specifically
  734. modify the tick values on those
  735.  NetWare/IP servers that act as IPX/IP gateways and/or send and
  736. receive packets over slow WAN links.
  737.  
  738.  You should specify a remote IP network/host address and the
  739. approximate one-way time (in ticks) to ping a remote host on the
  740. other side of the slow link using the UNICON utility.
  741.  You can specify up to five network/host-tick pairs.
  742.  
  743.  At the UNICON utility's Main Menu, select the following:

  833.  2. In AUTOEXEC.BAT, comment out the CALL LANWP.BAT line.

  835.  3. Merge the contents of LANWP.BAT into STARTNET.BAT.

  838. newer than the TCP/IP software on the workstation, the LAN
