  9. ABSTRACT:

  11. NIPS21.EXE upgrades the server's NetWare/IP to v2.1.  It is
  12. required for all NetWare 4.10 sites that want to run IP.  To use
  13. NIPS21, you must also download NIPW21.EXE.  NOTE: Before
  14. extracting NIPS21.EXE, create a server directory "IP" , at the
  15. root of a server volume, and place NIPS21.EXE in it.  Read ALL of
  16. the installation and configuration instructions before installing
  17. NIPS21.  If you want to do an IP server-to-server install of
  18. NetWare 4.1, also download INSTLL.EXE.

  641.  3. Do not install NIPS21 on a SFT III server.  NIPS21 does not
  642. support SFT III.

  644.  4. NetWare/IP 2.1 only supports the English language.  When you
  645. install NetWare/IP 2.1 on a NetWare server with the LANGUAGE
  646. parameter set to French, Italian, German, or Spanish, the
  647. NetWare/IP installation module will automatically load using
  648. English.  There is no need for you to change the LANGUAGE
  649. parameter value.

  651.  5. On the server, create the directory IP at the root of a
  652. server volume.
  653.  
  654.  6. Place NIPS21.EXE in the directory you created.
  655.  NOTE:  Because the paths in NIPS21 are unusually long, it is
  656. vital that you not use a longer directory name, or extract NIPS21
  657. lower in the directory structure.  If you do, some of the files
  658. may not install properly because of too long a path name.
  659.  
  660.  7. Execute NIPS21.EXE.    
  661.  NIPS21   <enter>
  662.  
  663.  For more information on setting up a server-based installation,
  664. refer to Chapter 4 of the NetWare/IP Administrator's Guide (in
  665. Dynatext).
  666.  
  667.  8. NIPS21 includes NETDB.NLM (in SYS:\IP\NWIP1\SYSTEM) and
  668. V_NFS.NLM (in SYS:\IP\NWIP2\SYSTEM).  NetWare 4.1 ships with same
  669. two NLMs.
  670.  If you install NIPS21 using the NetWare/IP-NetWare 4.1
  671. "Integrated Install", select NO when prompted to overwrite these
  672. files.  If you inadvertently overwrite the files, you can copy
  673. them from NIPS21, to the server, after the NetWare 4.1
  674. installation is complete.
  675.  
  676.  9. If your server runs the NUC.NLM provided with UnixWare, you
  677. must unload NETDB.NLM before installing NIPS21. 
  678.  To unload NETDB.NLM, type:   UNISTOP <Enter>
  679.  at the server console prompt.
  680.  
  681.  10. To install NIPS21 on a remote NetWare server across an IP
  682. network, do the following:
  683.  
  684.  --- A. Copy the following files from \IP:
  685.  |         - NWCCSS.NLM to SYS:SYSTEM of the server on which you
  686. plan to
  687.  |           install NWIP.
  688.  
  689.  |         - XCONSOLE.NL2 to SYS:SYSTEM\XCONSOLE.NLM.

  697.  --- B. If XCONSOLE is already running on the remote server,
  698. unload and reload it before proceeding.

  703.  --- D. When NWIP installation finishes copying the files to your
  704. server, it will prompt you to log in using the admin user object. 
  705. If you are unable to log in, unload NETDB and then run UNISTART. 
  706. Then enter the following command at the server console prompt to
  707. create the UNICON management groups:

  709.       LOAD UNICON /L INITNWIP <Enter>

  711.  UNICON will launch and prompt you to log in as Admin.

  713.  --- E. After you log in successfully, the installation program
  714. will finish the NetWare/IP initialization and unload UNICON.

  716.  --- F. For more information on using XCONSOLE to install over
  717. the IP protocol, read XCONSOLE.TXT, which is in
  718. SYS:IP\NWIP2\SYSTEM.

  720.  11. Make UNISTART.NCF the last line in your AUTOEXEC.NCF.  You
  721. can modify AUTOEXEC.NCF using the INSTALL utility.
  722.  
  723.  Installing the UNICON Management Groups Manually
  724.  ------------------------------------------------
  725.  If you are able to log in as ADMIN, when you install NIPS21, the
  726. installation program creates the UNICON management groups
  727. described in Chapter 5 of the "NetWare/IP Administrator's Guide"
  728. (in Dynatext).  These management groups are created in the
  729. server's default context.  Once the groups are created, you can
  730. delegate UNICON management tasks by adding users to the
  731. appropriate groups.  Because the groups are created in the
  732. default context, group members who log in using the group user
  733. object, can be authenticated at the local partition rather than
  734. at the root partition.
  735.  
  736.  If you change the server's default context, or if NDS is not
  737. installed on the server when NetWare/IP is installed, you must
  738. create the groups manually by typing the following command at the
  739. server console prompt:

  747.  Configuring Servers with More Than One Network Adapter Card

  749.  If your server has more than one network adapter card, it also
  750. has more than one IP address.  During installation, only the
  751. first IP address identified by TCP/IP, is entered into
  752. SYS:ETC/HOSTS.  After installation you must edit the
  753. SYS:ETC/HOSTS file and enter the remaining IP addresses used by
  754. the server.  For example, if your server named sjf-argos has two
  755. IP addresses, you would make the following entries in
  756. SYS:ETC/HOSTS:
  757.  
  758.  123.47.6.78    sjf-argos
  759.  123.48.6.8     sjf-argos
  760.  
  761.  Modifying the DSS Dedicated Mode Parameter
  762.  ------------------------------------------
  763.  By default, the DSS server runs in dedicated mode.  As its name
  764. implies, dedicated mode dedicates system resources to DSS
  765. activities.  If you want to free up some system resources to
  766. enable you to run other NLMs on the server along with DSS.NLM,
  767. you can edit the DEDICATED_DSS line in the DSS section of
  768. SYS:ETC\NWPARAMS to disable or enable dedicated mode as follows:
  769.  
  770.       DEDICATED_DSS 0 (to disable)
  771.  or
  772.       DEDICATED_DSS 1 (to enable)
  773.  
  774.  After changing this parameter value, you must unload and then
  775. reload the DSS.NLM in order for the change to take effect.
  776.  
  777.  Modifying the Maximum Number of UDP Datagrams and TCP
  778. Connections
  779.  
  780. -----------------------------------------------------------------
  781.  DSS.NLM allows you to manually configure the maximum size of the
  782. UDP packet queues and maximum number of simultaneous TCP
  783. connections maintained by DSS for storing SAP and RIP packets. 
  784. To reconfigure these parameters, add the following lines to the
  785. DSS section of the server's SYS:ETC\NWPARAMS:
  786.  
  787.       MAX_UDP_PKTS  <n1>    (default: 64)
  788.       MAX_TCP_CONNS <n2>  (default: 16)
  789.  
  790.  where <n1> and <n2> are decimal integers greater than the
  791. default values.
  792.  
  793.  You must modify the NWPARAMS file on each DSS server on which
  794. you want to change the defaults.  After changing this parameter
  795. value, you must unload and then reload the DSS.NLM, in order for
  796. the change to take effect.
  797.  
  798.  Modifying the Slow Link Customizations Parameter
  799.  ------------------------------------------------
  800.  If you modify the Slow Link Customizations parameter value, you
  801. must unload and reload the NetWare/IP server module for the
  802. change to take effect.
  803.  
  804.  Supporting Secondary DSS Servers with Multiple IP Addresses
  805.  -----------------------------------------------------------
  806.  If a secondary DSS server has multiple IP addresses, you must
  807. add the following line to the DSS section of the server's
  808. SYS:ETC\NWPARAMS:
  809.  
  810.       THIS_DSS_IPADDR <IP address>
  811.  
  812.  Where <IP address> is the preferred IP address for use by the
  813. DSS server component.
  814.  
  815.  Default Tick Values
  816.  -------------------
  817.  The default tick values listed in Chapter 7 of the "NetWare/IP
  818. Administrator's Guide"  (in Dynatext) have been changed.
  819.  The new default tick values are:
  820.       Ticks between nodes on the same IP subnet = 2
  821.       Ticks between nodes on the same IP net = 4
  822.       Ticks between nodes on different IP nets = 6
  823.  
  824.  Disabling DNS
  825.  -------------
  826.  If you disable the NetWare DNS service on your server, the DSS
  827. service is also disabled.  You can enable both services by
  828. enabling DNS.
  829.  
  830.  Increasing the Maximum Size of AUDIT.LOG
  831.  ----------------------------------------
  832.  If you increase the maximum size of AUDIT.LOG, you must make
  833. sure the TCP/IP Physical Receive Packet Size is set to a minimum
  834. value of 4202. Values less than 4202 may cause TCP/IP
  835. transmission errors.  By default, the Physical Receive Packet
  836. size is set to 4202, however it can be modified using the
  837. STARTUP.NCF file.  To ensure that the Receive Packet size is set
  838. to a minimum of 4202, check the STARTUP.NCF file for the
  839. following line:
  840.  
  841.       MAXIMUM PHYSICAL RECEIVE PACKET SIZE = <value>
  842.  
  843.  This line appears in the file, you must ensure that the value is
  844. set to a minimum of  4202 or remove the line so that the system
  845. accepts the default value.
  846.  
  847.  Setting up SAP/RIP Filtering
  848.  ----------------------------
  849.  NetWare/IP gateways provide a means to connect IP and IPX
  850. networks.  You can use one of the following methods to implement
  851. SAP/RIP filtering between the IP and IPX network segments when
  852. using a NetWare/IP gateway:
  853.  
  854.  1. Filter IPX-side information from flowing to the IP segment. 
  855. To do this, you must set up the server as a non-forwarding
  856. gateway as described in Chapter 8 of the NetWare/IP
  857. Administrator's Guide (in Dynatext).  A non-forwarding NetWare/IP
  858. gateway does not report SAP/RIP information learned from the IPX
  859. network to the DSS server.
  860.  
  861.  2. Filter IP-side information from flowing to the IPX segment. 
  862. To do this, you must use the INETCFG and FLTCFG utilities
  863. provided with NetWare 4.1.  First, bind IPX to the LAN card using
  864. the INETCFG utility.  Then use the FLTCFG utility to filter
  865. outgoing SAPs/RIPs as required on the LAN card you configured.
  866.  
  867.  NOTE: FLTCFG can only control LAN bindings configured through
  868. INETCFG.  You must bind IPX to the LAN card using INETCFG.  In
  869. addition, FLTCFG requires that you only use one frame type per
  870. board.  Therefore, you must use a separate LAN card for each
  871. frame type you are supporting.
  872.  
  873.  These are the only supported methods for implementing SAP/RIP
  874. filtering on a NetWare/IP network.  Note the following SAP/RIP
  875. filtering limitations:
  876.  
  877.    --- An IP-only server cannot filter incoming SAPs/RIPs
  878.  
  879.    --- A NetWare/IP server with one LAN card where IPX is bound
  880. to two frame types cannot filter outbound SAP/RIP traffic
  881. selectively on one of the two frame types.
  882.  
  883.  
  884.  Stopping a Server Running Both NetWare/IP & DSS
  885.  -----------------------------------------------
  886.  When you stop a NetWare/IP server, the server reports its status
  887. to a DSS server.  However, if the NetWare/IP server and the DSS
  888. server are running on the same machine, the NetWare/IP server
  889. would most likely report its status to the DSS server on the
  890. local machine.  In order for the rest of the network to learn the
  891. status of the NetWare/IP server, the DSS would have to report the
  892. change to the primary DSS at the next database synchronization. 
  893. However, if you down the server before the next synchronization,
  894. the change would not be reported to the rest of the network. 
  895. Therefore, when you stop a server that is running both the
  896. NetWare/IP and DSS server components, you should use the
  897. following procedure:
  898.  
  899.  1. Unload the NetWare/IP server
  900.  
  901.  2. Force the DSS server to synchronize its database with the
  902. primary DSS by typing the following command at the server console
  903. prompt:
  904.  
  905.            LOAD DSS /SYNC <Enter>
  906.  
  907.  3. Wait a minute and then down the server.
  908.  
  909.  
  910.  Running NIPS21 with Other Software
  911.  ==================================
  912.  Installing NetWare 4.1 Over an IP Network
  913.  -----------------------------------------
  914.  To install the NetWare 4.1 software using a server-to-server
  915. install over the IP protocol, download the file INSTLL.EXE.
  916.  
  917.  Compatibility With Previous Versions of NetWare/IP
  918.  --------------------------------------------------
  919.  NetWare/IP 2.1 is fully compatible with previous versions of
  920. NetWare/IP. However, you should upgrade your primary DSS server
  921. and all secondary DSS servers to NetWare/IP 2.1 to take full
  922. advantage of new features and functionality provided in this
  923. release.
  924.  
  925.  You do not have to upgrade your NetWare/IP servers and clients
  926. immediately. However, you should plan to migrate all your server
  927. and client nodes to 2.1 as soon as possible.  In the interim,
  928. make sure that all of your NetWare/IP 1.1 server nodes have been
  929. upgraded to the NIP191 (or later) patch.

  931.  When running multiple versions of NetWare/IP on the same
  932. network, keep in mind that you cannot manage your 1.1 servers
  933. using UNICON 2.1.  Similarly, you cannot manage your 2.1 servers
  934. using UNICON 1.1.
  935.  
  936.  Refer to Chapter 4 of the "NetWare/IP Administrator's Guide" (in
  937. Dynatext) for more information on upgrading your NetWare/IP
  938. network.

  941.  Compatibility with NLSP
  942.  -----------------------
  943.  NetWare/IP is compatible with the NetWare Link Services Protocol
  944. (NLSP) in SAP/RIP Compatibility Mode only.

  946.  Compatibility with Broadcast Applications

  948.  You can run non-SAP/RIP broadcast applications in multiple
  949. NetWare/IP domains on the same subnet.  However, to prevent
  950. routing loops you must make sure the NetWare/IP domains are using
  951. different UDP port numbers for NetWare/IP communications.

  953.  Troubleshooting
  954.  ===============
  955.  
  956.  What to Do if TCP/IP is Unavailable
  957.  -----------------------------------
  958.  When using UNICON to log in to a remote server, you may get an
  959. error message indicating that TCP/IP is unavailable.  This
  960. condition is temporary.  If you receive the message, retry
  961. logging in to the server later.
  962.  
  963.  If there is a DSS Database Error
  964.  --------------------------------
  965.  If you receive a message indicating that there is a Btrieve
  966. error in the DSS database, you must reset the DSS database on the
  967. affected server.  To reset the DSS database, type the following
  968. command at the server console prompt:  load dss /resetdb

  973.  ========
  974.  
  975.  Installing the DynaText Online Viewer
  976.  -------------------------------------
  977.  If you are installing the online documentation and the
  978. installation program detects that you already have the DynaText
  979. viewer installed, the installation program will ask you whether
  980. to overwrite the existing Dynatext viewer files.  If you choose
  981. to overwrite the viewer files, you must ensure that there are no
  982. users accessing the viewer.  If a user is accessing the viewer
  983. when the installation program tries to overwrite the files,
  984. installation will fail.

  986.  To Uninstall the Online Documentation
  987.  -------------------------------------
  988.  The UNINSTALL utility does not delete all NetWare/IP files from
  989. your server.  After you uninstall NetWare/IP 2.1, you must
  990. uninstall all files specified in Chapter 10 of the NetWare/IP
  991. Administrator's Guide (in Dynatext).  In addition, if you
  992. installed the online documentation on this server, you must also
  993. manually delete NetWare/IP document entries from the DynaText
  994. configuration file, SYS:\PUBLIC\SYSDOCS.CFG.
