  4. Overview
  5. ICON/NVL 386 is a Novell certified NetWare Loadable Module (NLM)
  6. for a NetWare 386 network.  ICON/NVL 386 provides a shared memory
  7. interface to a virtual disk environment in the ICON Intelligent
  8. Disk Servers.  Being a virtual environment, the NVL interface will
  9. always provide a perfect disk to the Novell operating system.  The
  10. driver is identical across our entire family of Intelligent Disk
  11. Servers.  ICON/NVL 386 can be run with all generic NetWare 386
  12. software.

  14. Associated Files
  15. Two files are on the ICON/NVL 386 diskette.  The SMDISK.DSK file is
  16. the NetWare 386 driver.  STARTUP.NCF is included only as a sample
  17. of a STARTUP file that can be created after the ICON/NVL 386 driver
  18. is loaded.

  20. Loading Instructions
  21. SMDISK.DSK driver supports several different memory and interrupt
  22. configurations as well as a Transactional Tracking System (TTS)
  23. Option.  After SERVER.EXE is loaded, the following command can be
  24. issued at the network prompt:

  26. load [path\]smdisk mem=<mem start add>:<mem blk size> int=<interrupt>
  27. tts=<on/off>
  28.  
  29. Memory Location and Size
  30. The first parameter is the memory location and size.  A number of
  31. memory locations are supported in the driver including several
  32. locations in extended memory for the new 16 bit Target Cards.  The 
  33. memory address must correspond to the RAM setting on the SMILE
  34. Target card followed by a colon.  The memory size, is entered in
  35. hexidecimal numbers after the colon.  The memory size is denoted as
  36. shown below, according to the model number of ICON Target card:

  38.        8000 = 32K
  39.       10000 = 64K
  40.       20000 = 128K (for 16 bit Target Card)

  42.       The ICON/SMILE Target card comes in four different models. 
  43.       The last three or four digits of the part number indicate the
  44.       model number:
  45.  
  46.       810-032-002 = 64k only
  47.       810-032-005 = 64k only
  48.       810-032-006 = 32k or 64k options
  49.       810-032-006A = 32k or 64k options
  50.  
  51. For example, if the SMILE Target card's RAM address is D0000 and
  52. the card is configured for 32K, the memory parameter following
  53. SMDISK would be 8000.  The command would be entered as:

  55.       load smdisk mem=d0000:8000
  56.  
  57. Interrupt Setting
  58. Currently, four different primary interrupts are supported: 15, 10,
  59. 11, 12.  These interrupts are represented to the driver by a
  60. hexidecimal equivalent.  If the SMILE Target card is configured
  61. with interrupt 15 for example, the interrupt parameter following
  62. the memory parameter would be int=f (hexidecimal f = decimal 15). 
  63. Likewise, with the card configured at interupt 11, the entry would
  64. be made as int=b (hexidecimal b = decimal 11).

  68. TTS Option
  69. ICON/NVL 386 supports Novell's Transaction Tracking System (TTS)
  70. feature on all systems.  Turning the ICON/NVL 386 TTS option on
  71. (which is the default setting) turns off the ICON Intelligent Disk 
  72. Server cache and allows all writes to go directly to disk.
  73. Currently, there is no way to distinguish a TTS write from a
  74. regular write, so with the ICON/NVL 386 TTS option on, all writes
  75. will go directly to disk.  As a result, performance will decrease. 
  76. Turning TTS off will allow the data to be written to the disk
  77. server cache memory.  The system will perform faster, however,
  78. there are data loss risks introduced if power to the disk server
  79. was lost.  Therefore, we recommend that a UPS be installed with the
  80. Intelligent Disk Server.  NetWare 386 version 3.1 will provide a
  81. special flag for TTS writes which will allow ICON/NVL 386 to
  82. distinguish between writes.  To turn TTS off, the parameter tts=off
  83. should follow the interrupt parameter when the LOAD SMDISK 
  84. command is issued. Please note that Novell's TTS feature will
  85. continue to function under either option.

  87.       load smdisk mem=d0000:8000 int=f tts=off
  88.  
  89. Once the LOAD SMDISK command has been executed, the driver will
  90. notify NetWare of the number of available drives and a prompt will
  91. be displayed on the file server monitor.  The 'load INSTALL' command
  92. can then be executed to perform the normal disk and volume operations.
  93. The INSTALL NLM will allow the installer to configure a STARTUP.NCF
  94. file so that manual loading of ICON/NVL 386 will not be necessary again.
  95. Please note that when the "Create STARTUP.NCF" option under the
  96. INSTALL NLM is used for the first time, the memory size parameter will
  97. need to be added to the information displayed on the screen.
