SYMPTOM
Earlier versions of DIRECTFS.NLM could cause database backups to be
invalid. Earlier versions of DIRECTFS.NLM are not compatible with some
versions of NetWare, specifically NetWare v3.11 SFT III and NetWare
v3.12.

Installation Instructions:
Search your NetWare v3.11, v3.11 SFT III, or v3.12 server for all
instances of DIRECTFS.NLM. Note: You do not need apply this
DIRECTFS.NLM to NetWare 4.xx - the DIRECTFS.NLM code is already part of
SERVER.EXE. NetWare v4.0 customers - the version of DIRECTFS.NLM
included in your SERVER.EXE is 1.06 and has some known caching problems
which are known to possibly cause problems with database backups - it
highly encouraged that you upgrade your NetWare to v4.01. NetWare v4.01
customer will not need to implement this file because the DIRECTFS.NLM
v1.08 code is part of SERVER.EXE.
1. FLAG the existing occurrences of DIRECTFS.NLM on your server as RW.
Example: F:\SYSTEM>FLAG DIRECTFS.NLM N
2. Rename the existing DIRECTFS.NLM as DIRECTFS.106 or DIRECTFS.107
depending on what version it is.
3. Copy the new DIRECTFS.NLM from DFS108.EXE onto your server and
confirm that the new DIRECTFS.NLM v1.08 works with your system.
4. Once you have verified that the new DIRECTFS.NLM works with your
system delete the old versions of DIRECTFS.NLM from your server.
Solution Specifics:
Any application that makes DIRECTFS.NLM calls should be using the v1.08
of DIRECTFS.NLM.
Replace the DIRECTFS.NLM on your NetWare v3.11, NetWare v3.12 or NetWare
v3.11 SFTIII server if your DIRECTFS.NLM is an earlier version than v1.08
included in this download.
DIRECTFS.NLM allows an application to write directly to a NetWare volume
and bypass NetWare cache. The most common applications that use DIRECTFS
calls are database servers running as a collection of NLMs on a NetWare
3.x or 4.x platform. If you have questions whether or not your
application makes DIRECTFS calls - contact the vendor of the application.
NetWare v3.11 did not ship with a version of DIRECTFS.NLM. NetWare v3.11
SFT III did not ship a version of DIRECTFS.NLM. NetWare v3.12 includes
DIRECTFS.NLM v1.08 (the same file that is included with this download).
NetWare v4.0 included DIRECTFS.NLM v1.06 as part of SERVER.EXE. If you
are a NetWare v4.0 customer it is highly recommended that you upgrade to
NetWare v4.01. NetWare v4.01 included DIRECTFS.NLM v1.08 (the same that
is included in this file) as part of SERVER.EXE.
It should be noted that NetWare v4.01 has a stub file named DIRECTFS.NLM
in SYS: SYSTEM that is smaller than the DIRECTFS.NLM included in this
download. The DIRECTFS.NLM code is actually part of SERVER.EXE in
NetWare 4.x. The DIRECTFS.NLM in SYS:SYSTEM with NetWare v4.01 is only a
stub/dummy file for .NCF files that are looking to load DIRECTFS.NLM.
