Q. Are there any improvements in interactivity between 4x and Add-ons (NLM),
such as SAA 1.3B or connect?
A. NetWare for SAA version 1.3B runs on NetWare 4.02 using Bindery
Services. An NDS exploitive version of NetWare for SAA is currently in the
Beta phase, however.
The NetWare Connect product level 1.0.34 is required for NetWare 4.02.
This also contains a readme file specifying other product component
requirements. Updates are available on NetWire.
Q. Can 4x compression & sub-Allocation be installed onto an existing 3x server
without loss of data? How painful is it overall?
A. These facilities are available only upon the NetWare 4.02 operating
system. Upgrading from NetWare 3.11/3.12 can be performed as an in place
upgrade. Novell has published a script to assist users in achieving a smooth
upgrade.
Q. When will DSMERGE become available?
A. With the next major release of NetWare 4, scheduled for later this
calendar year, an NDS directory merging utility will be available. At this
stage, Novell recommends that customers convert to NetWare 4.02 and NDS now,
and merge the directory trees later. This will allow them to reap the
benefits of NetWare 4.02, and gain directory definition experience prior to
merging the trees.
Q. How would NetWare 4 be integrated in a site that is mostly SUN system
based? What would be the primary benefits?
A. Sun users can use NetWare NFS on the NetWare 4.02 server. In addition
to the existing benefits realized with NetWare 3, the use of NetWare 4.02
allows these users to benefit from the NetWare 4.02 operating system
advantages including data compression and migration.
Q. We've recently installed a new NetWare 3.12 network (within the last year).
If we move to 4.x, how difficult is the re-training going to be for the
administrator and for users? Will 4.x provide any advantages for remote
access?
A. The new utilities, such as NWADMIN are Windows based, and user
intuitive. This makes administrator and user training less burdensome.
Remote access is provided by the NetWare Connect product. The product
level required is 1.0.34, which contains a readme file specifying other
requirements. Updates are available on NetWire.
Q. What application note describes VLM 1.1? Is NW ADMIN only specific to NW 4
or can you use on a NW 3 platform?
A. NWADMIN is exclusively a NetWare 4 utility. All printers defined
through Pconsole can, however be administered through NWADMIN.
Q. What Multimedia support is available on CD-ROM access with NetWare 4 - ie:
sound card support, special video? Compatibility (Integration) of Application
programs into NetWare 4 - How do I know what will work - ie: Lotus says notes
doesn't yet how will we be informed of compatibility?
A. Novell's NetWare Video 1.0 NLM product is currently shipping. This
product plays back the audio and video from a server based file (CD ROM or
file system resident), and feeds it to the Windows based user application
running on the workstation. The NLM based service is transparent to the
application. This allows centralization of multimedia data, which is
accessible to all multimedia workstations on the network. For full details,
contact your local NetWare Authorized reseller.
Q. How long before NetWare 4 will displace the 66% market share of 3?
A. NetWare 4 sales have been increasing. In 1993 NetWare 4 was ten
percent of overall NOS sales. It took over two years from the announcement on
NetWare 3 for it to overtake NetWare 2's revenue and licenses shipped.
Today it is hard for us to say when NW4 will overtake 3 but we are on our way
to making NetWare 4 pervasive and the new standard for distributed computing.
Q. Is there any way to program a NLM module?
A. There is a complete guide to NLM programming entitled "Writing NetWare
4.0 NLMs". It is available through.....
Q. What Windows drivers are necessary for clients running OracleWare on NW
3.12 operating in a NW 4.01 system? When will OracleWare be available on NW
4.01?
A. Firstly, it should be made clear that OracleWare, NetWare 3.12 Edition
includes the NetWare 3.12 operating system, upon which it runs. Also, the
Oracle 7 NLM, will run on NetWare 4.02 today.
You can use the drivers provided in the NetWare "red box" package.
The recommended most current DOS and Windows ODI drivers, however, are
available by downloading from CompuServe:
NOVFILES Forum
DOSUP9.EXE for DOS ODI drivers
WINUP9.EXE for Windows ODI drivers
Novell has no plans to make OracleWare (the integrated database and
network operating system in a single package) available on the NetWare 4.02
operating system. Rather, customers should contact Oracle directly for
information pertaining to the packaging of NetWare 4.02 into the OracleWare
product.
Q. As Novell positions itself towards an enterprise wide provider of NOS, your
company needs to also position itself from the support standpoint. What
action, changes is your company taking to provide support to large
companies...or will you be supporting companies through resellers as you have
done for years?
A. Novell is doing a lot of evaluation and analysis of what is the best
way to support large enterprise networks. Currently Novell is working with
all of the consulting partners like EDS, Aurther Anderson, etc as part of our
Consulting Partners Program to support some large companies.
We are also working with IBM, DEC and HP's support groups to support
NetWare better and of course we have great education programs available today
to train the users and administrators how NetWare 4.02 works.
We strongly believe that the resellers and channel will be first line
support for many business and we will support them as one of our first
priorities.
Questions from July NetWare 4 Days
----------------------------------
Q. How do we solve the following problem? We migrated out NetWare 3.11 to 4.01
over the weekend and it went well with the clients using DOS 7. We were using
a Dlink-3200 on an EISA 486DX50 and found it corrupted memory above 16mb.
Then we installed an Eagle NE3200 and the server would abend, even with less
than 16mb.
A. Please contact your local support organization. Technical support
questions cannot be addressed in this limited space forum.
Q. When running NetWare 4 without bindery emulation, will RIPS and SAPS on WAN
links be cut down?
A. A NetWare 4.02 server (with or without bindery emulation running) can
adjust the timing of both RIP and SAP parameters. Also, a NetWare 4.02 server
can restrict SAPs on specified networks.
NetWare Link State Protocol (NLSP) will be able to replace RIP and SAP
traffic on a WAN on NetWare 3 and NetWare4 networks. NLSP is also backward
compatible with RIP and SAP.
Q. Can NetWare 4 LAN script file put the LAN to sleep from 12am to 6am and put
itself back on-line at 6:01am? (3Com Plus has this capability.)
A. A fundamental function of NetWare 4 is the login restriction facility.
Using this, the administrator can prevent users from logging in to the network
during specified time periods. This is specifiable on a per user basis, so
that some users (administrators, userids that run utilities, etc.,) can be
allowed to login at times when the general user community is locked out. This
feature is fully supported in NetWare 4.02, as it is in the NetWare 3
operating systems.
Q. Will the password file be available for an encryption by the administrator?
This will enable the administrator to let the user know what their password is
if the user loses the password.
A. Administrators do not know, and cannot find users' passwords. If the
user has forgotten the password, the administrator can set that user's
password to a specific value, and declare it as having expired. This then
forces the user to change that password to a new unique character string.
Q. What backup products interface with NDS and SMS?
A. Please refer to the NetWare 4 Backup Solutions Guide for full details.
Backup solutions for NDS using SMS are available from the following
vendors:
Arcada (Conner) (YES Tested and Approved)
Cheyenne (YES Tested and Approved)
Emerald
IBM
Legato
Mountain
Novell
Palindrome (YES Tested and Approved)
Rememory (YES Tested and Approved)
Sytron
System Enhancement (YES Tested and Approved)
Q. In a new enterprise-wide sales opportunity, would Novell prefer to see
their dealers pushing NetWare 4 on all servers, on only on the administrative
server with the remaining servers running 3.x?
A. NetWare 4.02 is now be the preferred operating system installed on
servers. It will provide all services that NetWare 3 servers offer, with
added cost savings and administrative benefits. The most productivity gains
and increases on ROI are realized on the NetWare 4.02 servers. It should
therefore be viewed as the NOS of choice for the resellers and customers
alike.
Q. May a server object be contained in more than one OU container?
A. Defining a server object in more than one container is achieved
through the use of one or more Alias Objects. This applies to any resource
(object) that is accessed by users from different Organizational Units.
Q. Can the NDS tree be backed up from a workstation (using a DOS-based backup
program) instead of server-based backup (.NLM)?
A. Storage Management Services (SMS) provides a Target Service Agent
(TSA) for NDS which provides the mechanism for backing up NDS. The backup
program itself can be running on a DOS workstation but must use SMS to perform
the backup.
Q. Does DOS extension mapping really convert DOS apps into Mac apps that a
user can view and modify? Once changed, can they be accessed by PC-DOS
users/apps?
A. The DOS extension mapping creates filetype and creator information for
access by Macintosh applications and users. The actual file content
conversion and/or compatibility remain the responsibility of the application,
however.
Q. What problems could one run into while connecting a 4.01 network to a 3.11
network with a token-ring topology with fiber optics connecting the two?
A. [CHECK THIS]
There are no special requirements for connecting a network with
NetWare 4.01 to a network running NetWare 3.11. The planning involved in
connecting two token rings via fiber optic media does not change because of
the versions of NetWare. Factors such as network speeds, routing, and packet
sizes will need to be considered.
Q. As a Novell reseller, we are accustomed to putting their servers onto our
network cabling and being able to access both servers (when upgrading
software, etc.). If these are both 4.x servers, how would we do this? They
both have independent directory trees.
A. They both have independent directory trees. With NetWare 4, you can
still access any server (or any other resource) on your network that you have
rights to. Your two directory trees are simply two independent databases of
information about the resources and rights on your network. The traditional
file structure and access to servers is still available through tools such as
RCONSOLE and XCONSOLE.
Q. For a brand new NetWare user, what is a good path to follow to become
educated on NetWare 4 and NetWare NLMs? What tools are available?
A. With NetWare 4.02, the "Simplified Install" process is available.
This results in a quick installation of a working system, and a default
configuration for a functional NDS system. This relieves the installer of the
burden of indepth understanding and planning prior to commencing installation.
Additionally, there are formal Novell Education classes available
through the NAEC organization, which are highly recommended. Finally, the
Network Professional Association (NPA) also offers lab sessions in which
Novell staff conduct tutorials pertaining to the NetWare 4 operating system.
These are lab sessions in which the participants perform the typical tasks of
NetWare 4.02 and NDS installation and set up.
Q. We are using UnixWare and LAN Workplace for DOS along with NetWare 3.11 to
support access to the internet. Will these need to be upgraded when we
install 4.01?
A. No special upgrades are required with current software levels.
NetWare NFS 1.2C and NetWare NFS Gateway 1.2 are the required product revision
levels.
Q. How does the single login feature of PNW/Novell DOS 7--which I assume is a
bindery-type login--affect the single login feature of a NetWare 4.0 container
with bindery emulation? Which system would take priority--the PNW single
login or the NW4 single login? Would they interfere with each other?
A. Personal NetWare accomplishes login via the Virtual Loadable Modules
(VLM) technology which is the same method used by standard NetWare 4.X
clients.
Note that if a user has the same USERID and PASSWORD on their Personal
NetWare workgroups as they do on the NetWare 4.X network, then a single login
can attach them to both the workgroups and the NetWare 4.X network.
Q. What version of Excelan LAN Workplace should we upgrade to for NetWare 4.x
compatibility with TCP/IP drivers?
A. See answer to question number 26, above regarding currency of
software.
Q. Does NetWare 4.x offer peer-to-peer networking for file and printer
sharing? If not, will this be available soon?
A. Novell's peer-to-peer product is called Personal NetWare. Personal
NetWare is not included with NetWare 4.02 currently. Novell is evaluating
whether to include that in future releases of NetWare 4, but a decision has
not been reached at this point in time. I will say that the momentum is to
keep Personal NetWare a separate product.
Q. What is the difference between a domain-based system and NDS?
A. Please provide details pertaining to "Domain-based System.
Q. Are there any known problems with cc:Mail 3.0 when moving to NetWare 4.x?
A. The cc:Mail 3.0 product's use of NetWare services is limited to its
post office database structure residing on a NetWare volume. There are
currently no known problems involving cc:Mail 3.0 that are specific to the
NetWare 4.02 environment.
Q. What is difference between NetWare/IP and FleX/IP? Why choose one over the
other?
A. NetWare/IP is a connectivity product that allows routing of native IP
packets between NetWare servers. FLEX/IP is a NetWare product that allows the
services of NetWare spooled printers to be accessed by Unix users.
Q. Explain the difference between NetWare SAA and the typical gateway products
available?
A. NetWare for SAA is much more than a gateway. While providing the
gateway function to AS/400 and IBM Mainframes services, NetWare for SAA also
serves as a platform for distributed applications. Examples of these include
solutions available from Novell and third party organizations that offer
database gateways, electronic messaging interchange, and data backup/archival
to mainframe DASD.
Furthermore, the NLM implementation is a high performance 32 bit
process that is tightly integrated with the NetWare operating system. For
users that require both DEC connectivity as well as IBM connectivity, the
NetWare for LAT product shares some of the communications NLMs that NetWare
for SAA uses.
Q. How can you restrict a user's access to one of more of the file servers
while still keeping that person on the network?
A. Though users in the NetWare 4 environment log into the entire logical
network rather than a single file server, their rights to files and resources
are controlled by the supervisor. Using NetWare Directory Services, you give
a specific user specific rights to one or more file server or resources on one
or more file server. Or you can create a group with specific rights and add
that user to the group. When he or she joins, he or she automatically
inherits the rights of the other members of the group.
Q. Does NetWare 4.0 communicate with IBM 36 RPG2. data?
A. NetWare for SAA is the IBM host connectivity product within the
NetWare family. This product does not support connectivity to System/36
hosts.
Q. How many printer ports are supported for DOS clients? OS/2? UNIX? Mac?
A. The maximum number of printers for DOS, Unix, and OS/2 is 253. On
Macintosh systems only one printer is active due to the operation of the
Finder process.
Q. Can you combine various 3.x licenses into one 1000-user 4.x license?
A. Novell announced today, July 19, a new consolidated upgrade matrix to
become effective August 1. Along with price reductions and competitive
upgrades, this new matrix also includes the capability to consolidate licenses
toward the purchase of one higher level user count license. So, the answer
is YES!!
Q. Is Novell working with Microsoft to enable future compatibility with the
recently announced MXS "exchange" (enterprise-mail) product?
A. MXS exchange operates as an application server on the network and
coexists with other network servers. Microsoft has announced an intent for
MXS to "shadow" the NDS directory information into its own directory.
Interoperability with Novell's NetWare MHS will require the use of the SMTP
and/or X.400 messaging protocols or an MHS gateway.
Microsoft Mail desktop applications may operate natively with Netware
MHS based upon the Netware MHS Driver for Microsoft Mail (available on
NetWire) and in future versions with MAPI 1.0 service providers to MHS and
NDS.
