  38.  This file contains the latest release of NetWare v4.00 Operating
  39. System
  40.  Patches.  The following files are included in this release:

  45.  1. A second documentation file by the name of PM400.DOC is
  46.     included, which accompanies PM400.NLM.  PM400.NLM is
  47.     required when loading the dynamic patches (nlms).

  52.     concept and installation instructions.

  56.  PATCH MANAGER FOR NETWARE v4.00

  60.  This NLM is the patch manager for NetWare v4.00 and must be
  61. loaded before
  62.  any patches are loaded.

  65.  DESCRIPTION OF THE PATCHES

  67.  GETLOCFX.NLM

  69.  NetWare 4.00 servers will respond to GetLocalTarget requests
  70. even though
  71.  they cannot provide the best route in a STAR or WAN environment. 
  72. This
  73.  would result in a performance hit for a workstation because its
  74. packets
  75.  would continue to route through the 4.00 server even though a
  76. more direct
  77.  route was available.
  78.  
  79.  IMPORTANT NOTE:
  80.  This patch MUST be loaded before the LAN driver is loaded.  If
  81. the patch is
  82.  not loaded before the LAN driver the patch will not fix the
  83. problem.  Place
  84.  the following commands in the AUTOEXEC.NCF file before the LOAD
  85. LAN
  86.  drivername command.

  93.  When using NetWare 4.0 and the IBM LAN cards the file server
  94. will hang as
  95.  soon as a user attempts to log in.  This is due to a problem
  96. with NCP 22 51
  97.  and bus master lan drivers, and physical vs. logical memory
  98. addresses.

  102.  DYNAMIC PATCH INSTALLATION AND INFORMATION:
  103.  ***************************************************************

  105.  Each of the dynamic patches listed above are intended for
  106. NetWare v4.00.
  107.  The dynamic patches are loaded at the file server console as
  108. NetWare
  109.  Loadable Modules and require PM400.NLM v1.00 to be loaded.
  110.  
  111.  It is recommended that the command "LOAD <patch name>" be placed
  112. in the
  113.  server's AUTOEXEC.NCF file to ensure that the patch is always in
  114. effect
  115.  when the server is initially brought up.
  116.  
  117.  Since they are NLM's, the patches can be loaded and unloaded
  118. without ever
  119.  having to bring the server down. Once loaded, the Operating
  120. System is
  121.  patched and ready to go.
  122.  
  123.  Unloading the patches will restore the Operating System to its
  124. original
  125.  "un-patched" state.

  140. Installation Instructions:
  141.  
  142. To install a specific patch or patches, simply place the patch
  143. file in the
  144.  same directory as the other NLM files (SYS:SYSTEM or DOS
  145. partition), and
  146.  type "LOAD <patch name>" for each patch you wish to load.  Once
  147. a patch has
  148.  loaded, all changes are in effect until it is unloaded.  If an
  149. error
  150.  message appears, contact Novell Technical Support.  As suggested
  151. above, you
  152.  will probably want to enter the LOAD commands into your
  153. AUTOEXEC.NCF file
  154.  to insure that the patches are loaded automatically.
