  2.         INSTRUCTIONS FOR RUNNING UPDATE.EXE
  3.  
  4. The 2.1 UPDATE program is available on 3.5" and
  5. 5.25" diskettes. The program can be run with either
  6. the unlinked object files or the linked executable
  7. file. 
  8.  
  9. Procedure #1. Installed executable file.
  10.  
  11. If your file server is already running, and the
  12. operating system can boot from the hard disk,
  13. perform the following steps:
  14.  
  15. 1.  Login to the system as the supervisor and map a
  16. drive to the "SYS:SYSTEM" directory (if you don't
  17. have one already mapped). 
  18.  
  19. 2.  Change to the drive mapped to SYS:SYSTEM. 
  20.  
  21. 3.  Flag the "NET$OS.EXE" file Read/Write by
  22. typing the following: "FLAG NET$OS.EXE R/W."
  23.  
  24. 4.  Copy the program "UPDATE.EXE" from the
  25. floppy diskette into the "SYS:SYSTEM" directory. 
  26.  
  27. 5.  Execute the update by typing: "UPDATE
  28. NET$OS.EXE."
  29.  
  30. 6.  The program will now perform the necessary
  31. update and will inform the operator that the
  32. necessary updates have been made.
  33.  
  34. 7.  Reset the "NET$OS.EXE" file attribute status to
  35. Read Only by typing the following: "FLAG
  36. NET$OS.EXE R/O."
  37.  
  38. The update is now complete.  It is necessary to re-
  39. boot the file server to make the update effective.

  42. Procedure #2. Executable file on diskettes.
  43.  
  44. If you are booting your system from a single 3.5"
  45. diskette or dual 5.25" diskettes perform the
  46. following:
  47.  
  48. 1.  Boot DOS on your machine and insert the
  49. diskette containing "UPDATE.EXE."
  50.  
  51. 2.  On a dual drive machine, insert your working
  52. copy "OSEXE-1" diskette in drive B.
  53.  
  54. 3.  Type: "UPDATE B:NET$OS.EX1".  On a dual drive
  55. system, the update program will begin scanning
  56. "NET$OS.EX1" for the areas to be updated and will
  57. perform the updates.  On a single drive system, you
  58. will be prompted to insert the OSEXE-1 diskette in
  59. drive B after UPDATE.EXE has loaded.

  61. 4. If you have a 5.25" version, it will be necessary
  62. to repeat the process for the OSEXE-2 diskette.  Do
  63. this by repeating step #2 and inserting "OSEXE-2" in
  64. place of "OSEXE-1."  Now repeat step #3 using the
  65. file name "NET$OS.EX2" in place of "NET$OS.EX1."
  66.  
  67. The update is now complete.  It will now be
  68. necessary to re-boot the file server using the
  69. modified "OSEXE" diskettes.

  72. Procedure #3. Object files.
  73.  
  74. The final step to the update procedure is to modify
  75. the actual object files.  You should perform this
  76. procedure whether the first two procedures described
  77. above were performed or not.  This will insure that
  78. the update will be included in any future re-
  79. generations of operating systems.

  81. Complete the following to update the object files: 
  82.  
  83. 1.  Locate your working copies of the "TTSOBJ-1"
  84. and the "SFT2OBJ-1" diskettes.
  85.  
  86. 2.  On a machine boot with DOS, insert the diskette
  87. containing the "UPDATE.EXE" program in Drive A.
  88.  
  89. 3.  If you have a dual drive system, insert the
  90. diskette "TTSOBJ-1" diskette in drive B.
  91.  
  92. 4.  Type: "UPDATE TTLEV2_1.OBJ."  The patch will
  93. now be performed.  On a single drive system, you
  94. will need to insert "TTSOBJ-1" when prompted to
  95. insert the diskette for drive B."

  97. 5.  After step #4 has completed it will be necessary
  98. to repeat step #4 using the diskette "SFT2OBJ-1" in
  99. place of "TTSOBJ-1" and typing "UPDATE
  100. LEV2_1.OBJ in place of "TTLEV2_1.OBJ."
