InForms Diagnostics Information TechTip
Purpose of this document
Describe the InForms Diagnostics utility.
Troubleshooting Steps / Issue / Problem / etc.
InForms Diagnostics is a free Windows 3.1 utility developed by Novell to help troubleshoot an
InForms 1.x or 4.1 form. You can open up the form in the diagnostics utility and quickly get
access to important information about the form.
The utility has been used extensively by Novell for the past year to help troubleshoot problems
with forms. Novell has decided to make it available to it's customers for free. The utility is
available on Novell's Technical Services BBS at (801) 225-4414 or from NetWire on
CompuServe.
Features:
1. You can scroll through a list of form objects and have important Object Definition
information display on the screen for that object. Objects in this list with invalid formulas are in
red, objects with valid formulas are in blue, and objects without formulas are in black.
2. You can sort the list of form objects by page number, by object type, by the creation order, by
the Tab Order, or only objects with formulas.
3. You can quickly view formulas on that object. In the View Formula dialog, you can see all
the formulas on that object at once, or individually. You can even print them out.
4. The main screen also shows how many objects are in the form as well as how many objects
can be linked to databases. This is helpful when trying to determine what type of database to link
to. Every database has a limit to the number of fields that can be linked to one database/table.
This number varies among the different database types.
5. It tells you how many formulas you have - Invalid, Valid, and Independent. This is helpful
when you are trying to track down invalid formulas and aren't sure how many you have.
6. You can quickly view information on your links. The Data Links dialog will also point out
form objects that are not the same format as the database field they are linked to. The lines in the
linked form object list are RED for invalid formats, GRAY for not linked, and CYAN for correct
links.
7. Another popular feature is the ability to create a custom report to document your form. You
can select what form information you want from a list, then have it either printed or saved to a
DOS text file. This is helpful for documenting links, and formulas, etc.
The InForms Diagnostics files should be placed in the INF41 directory.
