  1.              WINDOWS DRIVERS VS. WORDPERFECT DRIVERS
  2.                 USING WORDPERFECT 5.1 FOR WINDOWS
  3.                         September 25, 1992

  5. The main differences between WordPerfect and Windows drivers can
  6. be divided into four different categories:  fonts, speed, forms, and
  7. support.  Following is a list that describes the strengths and
  8. weaknesses of each in each category:

  10. Fonts: 
  11.  
  12. WordPerfect supports Built-In, Cartridge, and Soft Fonts.  Graphical
  13. fonts are not currently supported except when used with third-party
  14. font packages that work with WordPerfect drivers.   Some examples of
  15. third-party font packages that allow the printing of graphical fonts are
  16. Fonts on the Fly and Morefonts.  Morefonts also has the ability to
  17. convert Windows fonts so that they will be useable with WordPerfect
  18. printer drivers.

  20. Windows supports Built-In, Cartridge, Graphical, and Soft Fonts.  Most
  21. third-party font packages are designed to work specifically with
  22. Windows drivers and not with WordPerfect drivers.

  24. Speed:

  26. WordPerfect drivers are generally much quicker than Windows drivers. 
  27. One reason for this is that Windows uses a method called hinting when
  28. printing.  This gives the Windows drivers the ability to print fonts
  29. graphically, but slows down the whole printing process.  However,
  30. when printing documents that are made up of mostly graphical images,
  31. WordPerfect drivers are still usually faster.

  33. Forms:
  34.  
  35. Most Windows drivers come with a list of predefined forms.  This list
  36. cannot be changed, deleted, added to, or modified in any way.  Also,
  37. Windows drivers allow you to select one orientation, form type, and
  38. bin destination at a time.  When you change any of these settings, the
  39. change will affect any document printed with the Windows driver.  In
  40. other words, the form type, orientation, and bin destination decided by
  41. the printer, not the document.

  43. WordPerfect drivers allow you to create new forms and modify or
  44. delete existing forms.  With WordPerfect drivers, you also have the
  45. capability of printing multiple paper types, multiple orientations, and to
  46. multiple bins all within the same document.  These settings are saved
  47. with the document so that every time you print the document, it will
  48. automatically print on the correct type of paper, in the correct
  49. orientation, and to the correct bin.  The settings are unique to each
  50. document, not to the chosen printer.

  52. Support:

  54. Windows drivers support about 400 different types of printers.  These
  55. drivers also support some cartridges, soft fonts, and third party sheet
  56. feeders.  WordPerfect drivers support over 1000 different printers. 
  57. Almost always, the WordPerfect drivers will have more extensive
  58. support for cartridges, soft fonts, and third party sheet feeders.

  60. Since WordPerfect drivers are developed at WPCorp, we have the
  61. ability to modify these drivers when problems are found.  With
  62. Windows drivers, WPCorp is only able to report problems to the
  63. developers of the drivers and then leave it up to them for changes that
  64. are necessary.  WordPerfect drivers can be directly modified by users
  65. using the PTR utility that comes with WordPerfect for Windows. 
  66. Windows drivers can not be modified using this utility.
