=================================================================
This README file contains information about using the
Spell/Hyphen Utility.
Use the Spell/Hyphen Utility to create and modify both main and
supplemental dictionaries. You can add or delete words, display
the common word list, set hyphenation points, look up existing
hyphenation points, convert and create supplemental dictionaries,
and convert 5.x main dictionaries.
Included is the following information:
* Concepts
* Running the Speller Utility
* Adding Words
* Deleting Words

* Looking Up Words
* Convert and Create Supplemental Dictionaries
* Helps and Hints
CONCEPTS
=================================================================
Main and Supplemental Dictionaries
==================================
Main and supplemental dictionaries contain word lists that are
compared with words in your document when spell checking. (See
Speller in Reference.)
Main and Common Word Lists
==========================
The main dictionary that comes with WordPerfect has a common and
a main word list. The common word list, a subset of the main
word list, is searched first to find the most commonly used words
quickly. The main word list is more extensive and is used to
find less common words and to check for spelling errors
phonetically.
The main dictionary contains hyphenation for word list languages.
The Spell/Hyphen Utility lets you create and change main and
common word lists.
Important: If you add a word to the common word list, you must
also add it to the main word list with hyphenation points in
order for it to be hyphenated.
Algorithmic Dictionaries
========================
The main dictionaries in some languages are algorithmic. This
means they use rules rather than a word list to check spelling.
They cannot be modified using the Spell/Hyphen Utility. However,
to add hyphenation to words in an algorithmic dictionary, you can
create a file dictionary named WPXX.HYD where XX represents the
language code. WordPerfect 6.0 uses this file to find
hyphenation points when using hyphenation with a language which
does not use word list dictionaries.
Hyphenation
===========
If WordPerfect does not use the speller dictionary (WPXX.LEX)
file during hyphenation as with word list dictionaries, you will
need to use the Spell/Hyphen Utility to maintain the WPXX.HYD
file used for algorithmic dictionaries.
If WordPerfect does use the speller dictionary (WPXX.LEX) during
hyphenation (as is the case with English), you can use the
Spell/Hyphen Utility to hyphenate any words you have added to the
WPXX.LEX file or to change existing hyphenation.

dictionary you want to change or create.
2 Choose Delete Word(s) from Dictionary, then choose Main Word
Area or Common Word Area.

ADDING HYPHENATION INDICATORS
=================================================================
You can add hyphenation indicators in words and use the
Hyphenation feature in WordPerfect to determine hyphenation in
your document. When no hyphen is present, the word wraps to the
next line when Hyphenation is set to Never in WordPerfect.
1 When adding words, type a hyphen (-) at each location where
you want the word to be hyphenated.
If you are adding words to a supplemental dictionary that you
intend to add to the main dictionary, insert the hyphens by
editing the file in WordPerfect first. * In order to edit the
file, you must first convert the file. If you are adding
individual words, insert the hyphens as you type the words.
If you do not intend to add a supplemental dictionary to the main
dictionary, do not place hyphens in words.
LOOKING UP WORDS
=================================================================
You can look up words in the dictionary by using phonetic
spellings (words that sound alike) or by using a word pattern
with wildcard characters. Wildcard characters are the question
mark (?), which represents one character, and the asterisk (*),
which represents zero to any number of characters.
1 Choose Look Up Word if you want to enter a word pattern that
may include wildcard characters.
or
Choose Phonetic Look Up if you want to enter a spelling that
sounds like the word you want to look up.
2 Type a search pattern, then press Enter.
CONVERT AND CREATE SUPPLEMENTAL DICTIONARIES
=================================================================
To update an old 5.X supplemental file or dictionary,
1 Retrieve the 5.X uncompressed supplemental dictionary into
WordPerfect 6.0 and save it.
2 From the Spell/Hyphen Utility screen choose Convert
Supplemental Dictionary in order to convert the file from a
WP 6.0 file to a supplemental format.
To create a supplemental file in WordPerfect 6.0,
1 You must use the operators mentioned below.
2 From the Spell/Hyphen Utility screen, choose Create
Supplemental Dictionary in order to convert the file to the
correct supplemental format.
The new supplemental file format includes skip words, replacement
words, and exception words. In WP 6.0 document format, comments,
replacements, and exceptions are preceded with a 2 character
operator. The first character on the indicated line is a
backslash (\). There should be no spaces before or after the
text.
The operators are as follows:
\= Replacement word
\| Exception word
\# Comment
The WP 6.0 document format is as follows:
search word<Hrt>
<replace or exception operator>text<Hrt> [optional]
[additional exception entries] [optional]
<comment operator>text<Hrt> [optional]
Definition Example:
financial adviser [search phrase]
\=financial advisor [replacement]
crash [search phrase]
\|cause a system failure [exception phrase]
\|cause an abrupt landing [exception phrase]
\|accident [exception phrase]
\#crash has a negative connotation [comment]
Jones [skip phrase]
API [skip phrase]
Before spell check
Mr. Jones will be testing our new financial adviser program.
We hope it doesn't crash.
After spell check
Mr. Jones will be testing our new financial advisor program.
We hope it doesn't cause a system failure.
Explanation
Jones is skipped, "financial adviser" is replaced with
"financial advisor", the user selected "cause a system
failure" to replace "crash".
HELPS AND HINTS

Updating your Files Quickly
Because the update process takes several minutes no matter how
many words you enter, it is best to enter all words and files
before you exit. If you have many words to add, the update
process will also be somewhat faster if you put them in a file
and then sort them before adding them to the Spell/Hyphen
Utility.
Using a Mouse
In order to use a mouse with the Spell/Hyphen Utility, you must
load a mouse driver into memory before accessing the utility.
