NetWare v4.0 auditing allows authorized users, who act independently of network administrators, to audit past and present transactions on the network.
Auditors ensure that records are accurate and secure by monitoring the following transactions:
- Logins and logouts
- File creations, deletions, reads, and
writes
- Directory creations, deletions, reads,
and writes
- Events directly related to users

Large Internet Packet (LIP)
Without the Large Internet Packet (LIP) feature of NetWare v4.0 loaded, if a server detects routers between itself and the workstation, the negotiated packet exchange defaults to a 512-byte data packet size.
Once loaded, LIP causes the server to ignore the router check during packet size negotiation. This allows packets larger than 512 bytes to be exchanged.
ble LIP functionality at the workstation you must enter a line in the NET.CFG file.

Internationalization
In response to expanding world markets, NetWare v4.0 is adapted for use with multiple languages. The NetWare v4.0 operating system, NLMs, and utilities use English as the default language, unless you set them otherwise.
NetWare v4.0 also allows you to use keyboard arrangements for different languages.w

Block Suballocation
In earlier versions of NetWare, if a file exceeded the standard block size, an entire block would be allocated for the surplus.
NetWare v4.0 has reduced disk space requirements by creating suballocation blocks. These smaller (512 byte) blocks can be used to store the extra data and thereby save the rest of the block for other files.
Although optional, block suballocation is enabled by default when you install NetWare v4.0.

Data Migration
Data migration enables the system to transfer idle data to a tape drive or other offline storage medium to free valuable hard disk space.
Storage device options include:
- Disk or tape
- CD-ROM
- High-Capacity Storage System (HCSS)
Although optional, data migration is disabled during installation by default. You can enable it if you choose.....

File Compression
File compression allows NetWare v4.0 to compress seldom-accessed files saved to the volume and increase disk space by up to 63%.
File compression is managed internally by NetWare v4.0. NetWare will automatically compress files saved to the volume after a period of time or files can be explicitly flagged to be compressed immediately after use. NetWare v4.0 automatically decompresses files when accessed.
Although optional, volumes are enabled for file compression by default when you install NetWare v4.0.tWare v4.0.

Burst Mode Protocol (BMP)
The Burst Mode Protocol (BMP) allows you to make high-performance connections between workstations and servers. After you make a connection, packets of data are transmitted in bursts. BMP is designed to transmit multipacket messages efficiently over the internetwork. To enable BMP on individual workstations, enter a line in the NET.CFG file on the workstation.n enable it by entering a line in the NET.CFG file on the workstation. on the workstation.
As a network administrator, you will manage the hardware and software components of a network that provide computing services to network users.
Knowing the new features of NetWare v4.0 will help you efficiently plan, set up, and manage a secure and productive network environment.
This lesson provides an overview of the new and powerful features of NetWare v4.0..

Introduction
Welcome to NetWare v4.0! With NetWare v4.0, you can bring all of the components of your organization's internetwork into one easy-to-use integrated environment.
NetWare v4.0 allows users to gain access to network-wide information and services just by logging in to the network. Servers work together to provide resources.
NetWare v4.0 inherits all the capabilities of earlier versions of NetWare and adds some new and powerful capabilities.

Server Memory Protection
NetWare v4.0 has a server memory protection feature that guards OS memory from corruption by third-party NetWare Loadable Modules (NLMs).
This feature allows you to run NLMs in a separate memory domain called the OS_PROTECTED domain. After it is loaded there and is found safe, you can load it into the OS domain (ring 0), where it can run most efficiently.
Using the protected mode ensures that your server will not be halted by a faulty NLM.

Managing Server Memory
Memory management in NetWare v4.0 has been redesigned to allow the server to operate more efficiently.
Previous releases of NetWare allocated memory in 6 memory pools that served different purposes. After extended operation of the server, some applications ran out of memory because management routines would not release allocated memory.

NDS hides network protocols, media, and communication links allowing users to access resources without understanding network complexities.
NDS helps you manage resources, such as network servers, users, and volumes.
NetWare allows volumes to be managed separately from the users.

What does NDS do?
NDS maintains information about every resource on the network such as users, groups, printers, volumes, and computers.
NDS supports an entire network of servers by distributing information globally, avoiding a single point of failure and providing an efficient network.
NDS allows users and network administrators to access any network service without having to know the location of the server that stores the service...service.not provide control over the file structure.........

In NetWare v4.0, memory is managed by the server so that applications do not run out of memory.
NetWare v4.0 has only one memory allocation pool; memory is reallocated from one operation to another. This results in fewer memory management operations and allows the server to run more efficiently...ly. more efficiently.to run more efficiently..
