  2. HOW TO BUILD A NULL MODEM
  3. -------------------------
  4. A NULL MODEM is nothing more than a
  5. cable that alows two computers to
  6. comunicate with each other by
  7. connecting their serial ports together.
  8. Using the apropriate software you can,
  9. for example, pass the ascii files from
  10. your TI-99/4A to an IBM computer or
  11. from the IBM to the TI without using a
  12. modem or phone lines. If you are
  13. switching from one computer to another
  14. this could be very handy item to have
  15. around.
  16. $4.00 to $8.00 dollars should be plenty
  17. to by parts. If you have any spare
  18. cables you may only need to move a few
  19. wires around and spend no money at all.
  20. I don't know how much they sell for in
  21. the stores because I have never seen
  22. one for sale but I'll bet it's a lot
  23. more than this will cost to build.
  24. The wiring is simple. Pins 2 and 3 are
  25. crossed so that Transmit Data will be
  26. connected to recieve data. Pin 4 is
  27. jumpered to pin 5 and pin 6 is jumpered
  28. to pin 8 on each connector. If you use
  29. shielded cable the shield should only
  30. be connected at one end to reduce
  31. noise. If you know an electronics
  32. engineer ask him to explain this to
  33. you.
  34. Once you have the null modem conected
  35. between two computers they should act
  36. as if they are connected through a
  37. modem with one differance. The
  38. computers can comunicate with each
  39. other at as high a speed as their
  40. serial ports will alow.
