MacFlix a review of sorts.
MacFlix allows a TI 99/4A or Myarc Geneve 9640 to view and printout
MacPaint picture files. It also allows saving the pictures in MY-ART and
Ti-Artist format. Epson comaptible printers are supported and the printouts
will be in an 8" by 10" format. Even tho you will not always SEE on screen
the whole picture, it will be printed out. Saving to MY-Art or Ti-Artist
will only result in what is actually seen on screen.
So what is the big deal about MacPaint files?? Well for one the absolute
BEST picture resolution on the market! The detail will astound you. For
some dumped pictures check out GEnie TI RT as I dumped a few and made them
available for viewing purposes!
MacFlix requires a TI-99/4A or a 9640, Disk drive, EA, TI-Writer, XB, or
Menu for the Horizon Ramdisk. It will load automatically from XB if in drive
# 1.
The Menu screen has 6 options:
1. Load Picture: This loads the Picture and then goes automaticlly to the
display mode.
2. Set Save Filename: This is where you place a filename if you want to save
the file or screen to another format.
3. Print Picture: This option allows you to print the picture in memory, not
off the disk.
4. Invert Picture: this simply reverses all pixels, so that black becomes
white and vice-versa.
5. Catalog Disk: allows cataloging disks, even a harddrive with subdirector-
ies.
6 Delete File: simply deletes file to make space on a disk for saving a
picture.
7. Exit: Exit the program.
Once the picture is loaded you have several options while the picture is on
the screen. You can scroll using step rates, by setting the rates. On the
9640 you can utilize its Hi-Res capabilitys and toggle Interlace and using
Zoom will actually show the entire picture onscreen!
File size limitations go with each type of machine. Most MacPaint files are
around 20K. The 4A can load upto 24K and the 9640 upto 32K. If the file is
larger, MacFlix will load the file and stop at the limitation point. Or in
sectors 102 for the 4A and 134 for the 9640.
Files saved in MacPaint format will be in D/F 128 format. MacFlix does some
error checking so as not to loading anything but MacPaint files. Files
saved in TI-Artist will NOT have the _C file as MacPaint are Black and
White pictures. If using the 9640 and in hi-res mode and interlace turned
on, only every other row of the picture will be saved due to a limitation
of MY-Art if saving in MY-Art format.
Where to locate and get pictures in MacPaint format? There are numerous
sources: National Information Services have thousands of them in MacIntosh
Sigs and their librarys. There are MacIntosh orientated BBS's. Also look in
IBM BBS's and Sigs as there are thousands there. AND lastly the Boston
Computer Society has pictures for sale. BEWARE of ARCed and files with file
extensions of '.PIT' and '.SIT' as these are archived using a special
Macintosh Archiver!!
Also included is a PCTransfer file converter. You can take files from IBM
MSDOS disks and transfer them to TI disks. Note that PCTransfer is required
to do this process.
