  24.                   Although this month's review is about THE
  25.                EVERYTHING TEACHER by Intellestar ($39.95 -
  26.                Intellestar, 25 West Middle Lane, Rockville,
  27.                MD 20850), I must first interject a couple
  28.                paragraphs about Super Sketch and add to the
  29.                reviews being done in user-group newsletters
  30.                   Super Sketch is one of the best computer
  31.                sketch pad I've used for ANY computer; the
  32.                best for the TI.  I've used similar pads on
  33.                the Apple in school and some of the other
  34.                computers in stores. They are all extremely
  35.                expensive but, in some cases (Apple,
  36.                particularly), not as sensitive.
  37.  
  38.                   In addition to doing some of the normal
  39.                sketch pad delights (automatic fill, texture
  40.                layering, pattern and thickness brush
  41.                strokes, full 16 solid colors, instant menu
  42.                and return, Super Sketch has a very easy SAVE
  43.                and LOAD feature.  (Some pads do not have a
  44.                SAVE feature.) And it draws lines, rays, and
  45.                boxes from points!  This is an amazing
  46.                feature.  And, as other reviews mentioned, it
  47.                permits a pixel-by-pixel erasure.  It does a
  48.                pile of other marvelous things, too, but they
  49.                are more complex to write about than do.  (As
  50.                a point of interest, I brought the thing into
  51.                my fifth-grade class the day after I bought
  52.                it.  "Here," I said to a trio of youngsters,
  53.                "try this." Without even asking what it was,
  54.                they took it out of the box, plugged it in,
  55.                and sailed away ((without even using the
  56.                tracing package that comes with it or without
  57.                looking into the manual [as all adults would
  58.                have had to do].)) Within minutes they not
  59.                only got the hang of it and were making
  60.                rather beautiful computer paintings, but
  61.                within a few minutes of that they were
  62.                teaching other classmates how to use this
  63.                tool [toy].)

  65.                   Do you teach kids?  Do you have kids?  Is
  66.                there still a kid locked inside you?  Did you
  67.                ever have the desire to be an artist?  Get
  68.                Super Sketch and live a life of exciting
  69.                adventure.

  71.                   >>> How about starting a swap-sketches
  72.                club through our dubbing system?  Everyone
  73.                who has (or will have) made a tape of their
  74.                computer painting, bring it in to your user
  75.                group and see if we can get a national
  76.                swapper going.  How many SSs are there out
  77.                there?  Trade with other artists.  I, for
  78.                one, would like to share this experience. <<<

  84.                   But all is not strawberry shortcake.  The
  85.                one big flaw - BIG     flaw - is that that SS
  86.                will not give you a hard copy.  This is its
  87.                biggest drawback.  I prefer the sketchpadness
  88.                over the other artist programs like GRAPHX
  89.                (which is far superior in many other ways to
  90.                SS) and TI ARTIST).  Though I understand
  91.                there is a disk program available now to
  92.                allow you to print out your graphics files
  93.                made from SS.  Haven't used it; haven't even
  94.                seen it in operation, so I can't comment on
  95.                it.  I do hope it solves this problem.<<<

  107.                   Oh, yes, Intellestar.  How could I forget
  108.                them.  I purchased a package from them
  109.                recently called THE EVERYTHING TEACHER.  It
  110.                contains six tapes (You can opt for disks.),
  111.                a very long (11 full pages) manual, and a
  112.                binder/tape holder.  Although it is a lot,
  113.                THE EVERYTHING TEACHER is not everything.  It
  114.                doesn't even come close to being everything
  115.                that a teacher should be (maybe I'm paranoid,
  116.                as a teacher), but it is a heck of a lot.
  117.                And what it is is really excellent.
  118.  
  119.                   There are four separate games included in
  120.                the package: excellent graphics.  The "TV
  121.                Sweepstakes" is a panel game just like on
  122.                the tube, but the questions and answers are
  123.                yours. Goofy-looking quizmaster and panelists
  124.                add to the fun and there can be a bit of fun
  125.                here, too, even in a "testing" situation.
  126.  
  127.                  "Baseball" is a two-player (or two-team)
  128.                game structured to move players around a
  129.                baseball diamond and in to score if your
  130.                questions are answered correctly.  I didn't
  131.                like this as well, though the kids did, and
  132.                that is what I bought it for.

  134.                  "Space Patrol - Lost!" is a bit livelier
  135.                and faster and (for me) much more appealing.
  136.  
  137.                   The final game -"Last Jellybean on
  138.                Earth" - had even more going for it in its
  139.                crazy sweets resulting in tooth decay
  140.                theme.  I liked this one, too.  In all cases,
  141.                the theme and the individual questions and
  142.                answers are yours.  My students are looking
  143.                forward to the day when they'll create the
  144.                "test" situations.

  146.                   Will it be easy for them?

  148.                   A rhetorical question.  I already know the
  149.                answer.  Yes!

  151.                   Thanks to a fifth tape: "The E.T. File
  152.                Editor.  This ingenious program lets you
  153.                load multiple-choice, true-false, or any kind
  154.                of question/answer you want, and then store
  155.                it for later use (when it's time to study
  156.                bones or leaves or states or money or parts
  157.                of speech or multiplication of mixed
  158.                fractions).  And you can load that
  159.                information into any of the four game
  160.                programs at any time with any large or small
  161.                group.  Very easily.

  163.                   Program Six is a sample file so you can
  164.                immediately access the system's games.  Fun
  165.                and learning are really combined here.
  166.                Intellestar has done it again.
  167.  
  168.                   Their programs are all in Extended BASIC
  169.                and, like the comments on the Super Sketch,
  170.                if you are, know, or would like to be a kid,
  171.                Intellestar programs are your meat.
  172.                   Ask for their catalog at the above
  173.                address.  Their programs are peculiar and
  174.                fascinating.  After a friend had given me
  175.                Vyger as a gift, I knew they had me hooked.
  176.                I couldn't wait to get THE EVERYTHING
  177.                TEACHER.  When I finally save up enough to
  178.                buy the LIFE SCIENCE SERIES, I'll do another
  179.                Intellestar review.  (This series has three
  180.                tapes on The Cells, one called Heart Attack,
  181.                and another call Inside Frankie Stein.)

  183.                   Meanwhile, I'd highly recommend VYGER and
  184.                THE EVERYTHING TEACHER even if you get it for
  185.                its clever, easily-accessed data base to make
  186.                your own trivia games or whatever.
