  27.      I think one of the most exciting
  28.  things to happen in our 99 world is
  29.  the advent of tutorial and conference
  30.  videos.
  31.  
  32.      Almost everyone has a VCR, the
  33.  ownership of which can now open new
  34.  worlds to 99 and Geneve users.  Now
  35.  that VCRs are coming down in price,
  36.  more and more groups and individuals
  37.  are using this tool to enhance their
  38.  computer activities and share their
  39.  computer knowledge.
  40.  
  41.      The unquestioned master of this
  42.  new genre is Dr.^Charles Good of the
  43.  Lima, Ohio, group.  Videos have been
  44.  around for some time and made their
  45.  first TI existence about five or six
  46.  years ago at the Chicago Fair.  Some
  47.  of the big-wiggies were interviewed
  48.  and some screens were shown of
  49.  different pieces of software.  This
  50.  amateur tape circulated for a year or
  51.  so around lots of user groups.  We
  52.  (then still in the millions, it
  53.  seemed) watched transfixed as new and
  54.  exciting things were explained and
  55.  shown to us.
  56.  
  57.      Then drought.
  58.  
  59.      Well, even though there were some
  60.  other videos around here andthere,
  61.  the drought really ended when Charlie
  62.  took up the cause with a vengeance.
  63.  Not only does the Lima group make a
  64.  monthly tape of the demos of their
  65.  meetings, but they have amassed a
  66.  vast TI tape library.  I have on my
  67.  desk (all from Lima) the following:
  68.  NEVER RELEASED OFFICIAL TI MODULES,
  69.  TI MULTI-USER GROUP CONFERENCE 1988,
  70.  CONFERENCE 1989 (2 tapes), CONFERENCE
  71.  1990 (3 tapes), MBX REQUIRED GAMES,
  72.  FUNNELWEB v4.2 DEMO, and DON
  73.  ALEXANDER'S GENEVE SOFTWARE DEMO.
  74.  These 10 tapes run about 50 hours!
  75.  They are filled with all sorts of
  76.  people demonstrating (or discussing
  77.  or teaching) all sorts of TI things.

  134.      This should give you a good idea
  135.  of the kinds of things available each
  136.  May just from the annual Lima Fair
  137.  (called "T.I. Multi User Group
  138.  Conference," for some unknown
  139.  reason).  Each of these six-hour
  140.  tapes use cameras on the tutor while
  141.  cutting into the screen
  142.  electronically when something is
  143.  being shown.  These tapes get better
  144.  and better each year, and the editing
  145.  techniques are superb.  Although I
  146.  haven't been able to attend the last
  147.  two years, I felt I got a big part of
  148.  the fair sent to me.  I know a lot of
  149.  other homebound TI acquaintances feel
  150.  the same.  It's norealsubstitute
  151.  for being at the fair, of course, but
  152.  it's a great second best.  The TI
  153.  experts are at your beck and call in
  154.  your home any time you want them.

  156.      In addition to all these fair
  157.  tapes, there are numerous "single
  158.  theme" jobs also available.  Don
  159.  Alexander of Macon, Georgia, for
  160.  example, does a fine job with the
  161.  Geneve.  I think this one is better
  162.  for someone who has used the Geneve
  163.  for awhile, though.  I hope someone
  164.  eventually does a truly step-by-step
  165.  basic tutorial of the Geneve, maybe
  166.  even a full six hours.  It is sorely
  167.  needed.

  169.      Charlie has also done theme
  170.  tapes, such as MBX (where he steps
  171.  through all the MBX modules) and
  172.  UNRELEASED (where he plays and
  173.  discusses all the delightful
  174.  unreleased TI modules). I found both
  175.  these tapes fascinating, particularly
  176.  the UNRELEASED, as I could load them
  177.  onto my SUPERCART or my GENEVE.
  178.  Charlie's FUNNELWEB 4.2 DEMO is a
  179.  classic.  The viewer is taken through
  180.  every step of the FWB configuration
  181.  process that (for some strange
  182.  reason) frightened so many people.
  183.  Though the tape is similar to
  184.  Charlie's tutorials in the BITS,
  185.  BYTES && PIXELS newsletter he edits
  186.  for Lima, it is far more extensive
  187.  and much clearer, as you can see and
  188.  hear everything being done live.  I
  189.  can't imagine anyone not being able
  190.  to perform FWB magic after viewing
  191.  this tape.

  204.  available to TI owners: the
  205.  full-length LOGO video done by Eunice
  206.  Spooner (RFD 1, Box 3720, Webb Road,
  207.  Waterville, ME 04901).  It is
  208.  wonderful! It also comes with a disk
  209.  full of lots of the items she demos
  210.  and a hardcopy listing of the items
  211.  and footage for easy tape locations.

  213.      Eunice is a certified elementary
  214.  teacher and it is obvious on this
  215.  tape.  She's teriffic: kind, patient,
  216.  step-by-step logical, no panic; and
  217.  she makes everything seem easy and
  218.  fun.  Which it is, if you do the
  219.  things she suggests.

  221.      I always liked LOGO.  Then I put
  222.  it away for a long time.  After
  223.  viewing this tape and trying her
  224.  programs, I discovered I  LOGO.
  225.  
  226.      If you own LOGO, get this package
  227.  instantly.  At $10 it is a total
  228.  steal.  And it is used as a
  229.  fundraiser to support the only ALL
  230.  KIDS TI USER GROUP IN THE WORLD! If
  231.  you don't own LOGO, buy it instantly.
  232.  (It's on sale everywhere CHEAP! I
  233.  paid $119 for my first and recently
  234.  bought an unboxed one for $15.) But,
  235.  new or used, pick one up for this
  236.  video/disk set alone.  You'll
  237.  rediscover the joys of computing and
  238.  the real fun (and learning, which is
  239.  why it is fun) of your remarkable 4a.
