  13.      This is a modified version of the official 2.3a release. A few things
  14. had to be changed in order to make PGP compile on the Amiga platform
  15. without errors. Additionally, a few Amiga specific features have been added
  16. in this release. The executables have been compiled with SAS/C 6.3 and have
  17. been tested for more than 4 weeks by several persons without any problems.
  18. Hence, the time for a release had come.
  19.  
  20.      This is a complete distribution containing all sources, manuals and
  21. contributions included in the official release. Only a few files have been
  22. deleted (like readme.vms), because they have no meaning for the Amiga
  23. version. If you want to use PGP on other platforms than the Amiga, I
  24. suggest that you get a copy of the original release (please look at the
  25. appropiate chapter in the docs for a list of FTP sites, where the archive
  26. is available).

  28.      If you have any questions concerning PGP, DO NOT E-MAIL ME UNTIL
  29. YOU'VE READ THE MANUAL!! Security is no easy thing, you won't be able to
  30. use PGP correctly without reading the manual!! However, if you do not
  31. understand something or something does not work as described, feel free to
  32. ask me via e-mail or to post your question in alt.security.pgp.

  34.      To compile PGP with SAS/C 6.x, just `cd' into the "src/" directory and
  35. call smake. You might want to modify the smakefile to compile a special
  36. 68020, FPU, etc... version. I have no idea wether the sources compile with
  37. other compilers than SAS/C, but I compared this PGP version with others and
  38. found it to be significantly faster than equivalent DICE and GCC versions.

  40. Finally, here's a list of changes I've made:
  41.  
  42.  - fixed a bug in PGP's filehandling: It tried to move files using
  43.    rename(), what failed if the target was on another device. Now, the
  44.    routine checks if the rename succeeded and copies the file otherwise.
  45.  
  46.  - modified PGP to recognize local (SET vs. SETENV) shell variables, too.
  47.    (Only available under OS 2.04 or later!)
  48.  
  49.  - the configfile has been renamed from "config.txt" to "pgp.config"
  50.  
  51.  - modified filename manipulating functions to handle "T:" as temporary
  52.    file directory
  53.  
  54.  - PGP requires only 8k stack or less. (If the shell's default stack
  55.    is too small, PGP allocates a new one.)
  56.  
  57.  - the executable is now pure and may be made resident
  58.  
  59.  - reformatted the english help-file. (Thanks to Mark Constable
  60.    <markc@wnet.edex.edu.au> for the effort!!)

  62.  - modified the md5sum utility to work on the Amiga. The sources,
  63.    executable and manual can be found in the "contrib/" directory.

  66. If you want to validate if all files are unmodified, use the md5sum utility
  67. together with the checksums appended to this text. Just type:
  68.  
  69.         contrib/md5sum/md5sum -cv readme.amiga
  70.  
  71. and all files in the distribuion will be checked. This file file itself is
  72. signed with my secret key, so a simple
  73.  
  74.         PGP -ka readme.amiga
  75.         PGP readme.amiga

  77. will check the integrity of this text, too.
