About the Images "2Pearls" and "Shell"
Legal notes
-----------
These images have been made for use as cover sheets/inlays for the
CD-ROM "Meeting Pearls Volume 2", as well as for advertisements for
this CD-ROM. Authorized manufacturers and/or distributors of this
CD-ROM may use these images for the aforementioned purposes and make
slight modifications to them. Such modifications may be e. g. changes
of brightness and contrast, clipping borders or superimposing
captions and other text.
Any further commercial use requires explicit, written permission from
the authors (see below).
Non-commercial redistribution of these images is not restricted.
Technical details
-----------------
Both images have been rendered using Real3D V2.47 or V2.49,
respectively. The scene is based on a sea shell object Randolf Schultz
generated with his "shelly" program. Together with Randolf I added
material properties, the pearls, and placed it on a marble
tabletop. The complete rendering took nearly 8 hours on a 25 MHz-68040
and 12 MBytes of FastRAM (for the full resolution of 1280x1280 pixels
and an antialiasing value of 4).
History
-------
The story of these images started on a small, exquisit meeting on the
Island of Neuwerk in the summer of 1994. Randolf had generated a sea
shell object and together we added material properties and rendered
it. The initiator of the Meeting Pearls-CD-ROM project, Angela
Schmidt, was very fond of the images we had created, and we developped
the idea of using images like this for the cover sheets of a proposed
successor to the Meeting Pearls Volume 1 CD-ROM. The Meeting-Pearls
Volume 1 was brand new at that meeting, and it wasn't even clear if
there would be a successor at all.
Some weeks before and after the Meeting in Karlsruhe in January 1995 I
spent some hours polishing the materials and lighting, once again
aided by Randolf.
