Release Notes:
Virtus WalkThrough Stereo 1.0
for Windows
August 2, 1995
- WELCOME -
We've never been so excited about a new product as we are about Virtus
WalkThrough Stereo 1.0. We've added four new screen output modes which
will support most 3-D stereo viewing hardware available today. A
partial list is included later in this file under the heading
"SUPPORTED HARDWARE."
Also in WalkThrough Stereo 1.0 is VRML export. VRML (Virtual Reality
Modeling Language) is an exciting new technology which will soon change
computing for the masses. With VRML, models can have Internet URL
(Uniform Resource Locator) addresses attached to objects. Then the
models can be exported to VRML format (which is a text file) for
viewing by Internet VRML browsers. When the user clicks on an object
which has an URL assigned to it, the browser retrieves the information
bound to that URL.
If you're new to the world of the internet we suggest you get "wired"
and then come visit our World Wide Web site. Our address is
http://www.virtus.com. You'll be glad you did.
While you're there you can enter your best files into our Model of the
Month contest. Also, you'll want to explore our own VRML worlds
accessible from our home page with your favorite VRML browser.
Virtus WalkThrough Stereo is a "lite" version of Virtus WalkThrough Pro
with Stereo capabilities and VRML export added as its main features. It
fully demonstrates the ease of use and powerful features offered in the
full version of Virtus WalkThrough Pro. With Virtus WalkThrough Stereo
1.0, you'll be able to save the models you created and then easily view
them in Stereo and/or export them to VRML format with a single menu
selection. We hope you enjoy Virtus WalkThrough Stereo 1.0 so much that
you'll purchase Virtus Virtus WalkThrough Pro or one of the other
quality software products in the Virtus family.
Some valuable features currently found in WalkThrough Pro in addition
to those in Virtus WalkThrough Stereo 1.0 include: texture mapping,
smooth shading, importing and exporting several popular file formats,
making movies, and a nice lighting editor. In addition, you can open
multiple models and libraries at the same time. You can also create
models using multiple layers, which simplifies creating complex models.
WalkThrough Pro is widely available for sale on the Internet, in major
computer software mail-order catalogs, from major software retailers,
or directly from Virtus Corporation by calling 800.841.8871.
- INSTALLATION -
1. From File Manager or Program Manager, select Run from the File menu.
2. At the Command Line, type d:\virtus\setup\setup
3. Follow the instructions in the dialog box to installation.
Although it is possible to run Virtus WalkThrough Stereo 1.0 directly off
the CD-ROM, we strongly recommend that you install and run the
application from your hard drive. This will optimize the performance of
Virtus WalkThrough Stereo 1.0.

- KEYBOARD NAVIGATION -
Here's how you can use the arrow keys or numeric keypad to navigate
through your designs:
Using the arrow keys:
Up Arrow - moves you forward
Down Arrow - moves you backward
Left Arrow - causes you to look left
Right Arrow - causes you to look right
Using the numeric keypad:
8 - moves you forward
2 - moves you backward
4 - causes you to look left
6 - causes you to look right
Any of these keys can be used in tandem with the Shift and Control
keys for the same type of navigational control that you get when you
use the keys with your mouse. For example, holding down the Shift
key while pressing the Up Arrow or the 8 in the numeric keypad will
make the Observer look up. Experiment with different combinations of
the Shift and Control keys in keyboard navigation; you may find that
you like to move through your models without using the mouse.

- TURNING ON STEREO FROM WALK MENU -
Stereo mode is turned on by selecting "Stereo" from the Walk Menu (which
is available when the Walk View is active. Below "Stereo" is "Reverse
Eyes." Reverse Eyes switches which image is sent to each eye. Here's
how it affects different display types.
Alternate Scan Lines
Reverse Eyes switches the alternating scan lines used for each eye. Note
that whether this setting should be checked or unchecked depends on the
position of the Walk View on the screen. Usually it is quite obvious
that this value is wrong because it is very difficult to fuse the image
into a meaningful stereo image.
Rotated Stereo Pairs
Reverse Eyes with Stereo Pairs changes between cross-eyed stereo (left
eye on right and right eye on left) and wall-eyed stereo (left eye on
left and right eye on right) and then both images are rotated 90
degrees, the left counter-clockwise, the right clockwise.
Stereo Pairs
Reverse Eyes with Stereo Pairs changes between cross-eyed stereo (left
eye on right and right eye on left) and wall-eyed stereo (left eye on
left and right eye on right).
Over/Under
Reverse Eyes with Over/Under should not be checked. When Over/Under is
invoked the default value of Reverse Eyes is not checked. If there is
some reason why (e.g. hardware testing?) the eyes should be switched,
Reverse Eyes can be checked.
- STEREO PREFERENCES -
Stereo Preferences is where the display type is selected for particular
hardware and where you can adjust the output for your particular system.
Supported Display Types
Stereo Pairs - displays two images side by side
Rotated Stereo Pairs - two images rotated 90 degrees side by side
Alternate Scan Lines - two images interlaced
Over/Under - two images above and below on another
*See Crystal Eyes
The default values for Stereo viewing are:
Left/Right Disparity == 0.5 inches
Inter-observer Distance == 4.0 inches
Physical Image Width == 12.0 inches
Some explanation about these values...
*Left/Right Disparity
With left/right disparity at zero, distant objects will virtually
appear to be floating right at the distance to the screen. All closer
objects will appear to be floating in front of the screen.
To make far objects appear to be beyond your monitor screen, increase the
left/right disparity. This separates the left and right images on the screen
causing your eyes to "widen out" as if they were converging on a distant
object. Do not set left/right disparity beyond 2.5". That is beyond the
normal separation of your eyes, and it is uncomfortable for your eyes to
aim that far apart.
Having too many objects in "front" of your screen is usually
uncomfortable, and hard to adjust to. Especially when an object is
partially hidden (clipped, occluded, covered) by the edge of the
screen. If an object is only partially visible at the edge of your
physical monitor, say 20" away, then your brain "knows" the object is
at least 20" away -- since it is hidden behind the edge of your closer
monitor. Now, if the object in stereo is 10" away, then your brain is
getting two different messages (the stereo effect says 10", and yet the
object is hidden behind your monitor at 20" away); and so the actual
stereo effect is reduced. So if you have your settings and views set so
objects virtually appear in "front" of your physical monitor, try to
keep the object fully visible on the screen, and not clipped at the
edges of your monitor.
*Inter-Observer distance
This is the distance between the two cameras used for the two views.
SuperStereo is created by widening the distance between the two
cameras. The wider apart the cameras, the more different the left and
right views will appear, enhancing the stereo effect per object. Also,
widening the cameras increases the total depth within which stereo is
obvious. But too wide, and one camera may end up outside your house,
while the other is inside.
When cameras are wide apart, then nearby objects may be visible from
one eye only - you'll know it's near, but not have the two views to
know how near.
Inter-observer distance should probably be .5 inches for workstations.
This has to do with focus accommodation. And maximum comfortable parallax
angle.
*Physical Image Width
This is the actual width of your display in inches. Note that if you use
the default Physical Image Width (the width of the physical screen),
keep in mind that the Walk View must take up all of the screen for this
value to make sense. If the Walk view takes up only half the width of
the physical screen, then adjust the value accordingly. The above value
is set for a Walk View that is full-screen.
- TECHNICAL NOTES ON STEREO SETTINGS -
If the Walk view is hard to control, you probably have a telephoto focal
length implied by the Stereo settings. Try resetting them to their
defaults, or better yet their appropriate values for your setup.
The default values for Stereo viewing:
Left/Right Disparity == 0.5 inches
Inter-observer Distance == 4.0 inches
Physical Image Width == 12.0 inches
It is very possible that certain settings will result in no stereo
effect whatsoever (i.e. both eyes are seeing the same thing). Try
changing the values back to the defaults.
Stereo Pairs
To use a stereo pair HMD, choose Stereo Pair in Preferences
Stereo and then choose Stereo from the Walk Menu. If "Reverse Eyes" is
checked, the stereo pair is reverse-eyed stereo (i.e. cross your eyes
slightly to see the stereo image), and if "Reverse Eyes" is *not* checked,
the stereo pair is wall-eyed stereo (i.e. stare to infinity to see the
stereo image).
For Stereo Pairs, if the image is hard to fuse, try making the window
narrower horizontally or standing farther away from the monitor. Some
people have a hard time fusing images that are too spread out
horizontally. Then again, some people can fuse an apple and a banana
that are pasted on their ears.
VRex
To use the VRex HMD, choose Alternate Scan Line in Preferences Stereo and
then choose Stereo from the Walk Menu. Set the appropriate settings if
necessary. Remember to calibrate your VRex PanelBook for best
results!!!!!! (See VRex Calibration, below)
CYBERSCOPE
To use the Simsalabim CyberScope HMD, choose Rotated Stereo Pair in
Preferences Stereo and then choose Stereo from the Walk Menu. For best
results, make the Walk View full-screen.
CRYSTAL EYES
To use the StereoGraphics Crystal Eyes HMD, choose Over/Under in
Preferences Stereo and then choose Stereo from the Walk Menu. The
Over/Under Margin (i.e. vertical alignment of the two images) is
automatically set to a pretty good value. To adjust it manually (this
may be necessary depending on your monitor type), type in the new value
in the Preferences Stereo - Over/Under Margin box. Note that the number
listed is meaningless except for the StereoGraphics Crystal Eyes HMD.
The default value is 48.
- MOUSE NAVIGATION WHEN IN STEREO MODE -
Mouse navigation with "Stereo Pairs" checked can be confusing, because
it still uses the entire Walk View to navigate instead of one-half of
the walk view. That is, click in the left image to turn left, click *in
between* the images to walk forward or back, etc. It can be especially
hard to navigate while viewing the stereo pair. If you prefer to use
the mouse over keyboard navigation, try saving a path and playing
it back instead, or having someone else navigate for you. Another
annoyance is the mouse cursor itself -- it is not displayed in stereo,
and so with Stereo Pairs appears as two cursors. With VRex, the mouse
cursor can appear as though it is floating out of the screen. Mouse
Navigation is almost impossible with the CyberScope. For best results
use Keyboard Navigation.

- DOCUMENTATION -
The Manual directory contains a two-part Reference, Glossary, and a
two-part Tutorial. The files are TEXT files and generally too large for a
standard text editor. To view the Reference section, you will need to use
your favorite word processor to open the files. We recommend printing
these and putting them in a binder.
The reference will help answer questions about ideas and techniques not
covered in the Tutorial. The included Glossary will help you quickly
identify terms with which you may not be familiar. We suggest that you
print both and work through these from beginning to end.
- ADDITIONAL TECHNICAL INFORMATION -
- When "Snapshot" in the File Menu is selected, some users may get the
screen message "Can't interrogate driver." This means that the display
card being used doesn't support the standard Windows call being made to
create the snapshot. Short of upgrading to a card that supports all
standard Windows calls, you could use the "Snapshot" command by going
to Windows Setup and choosing another video driver; the Windows 3.11
(latest version) SVGA drivers work well.
- Printing works with most combinations of video cards and printer
drivers. However, you may experience some difficulty when printing.
First, make sure that the active window is the view that you want to
print, then print. If you still encounter difficulties, turn off Flash
Graphics in the Rendering Preferences and try again. If you still
experience problems, use the File Snapshot BMP command to save your Walk
View as a BMP file and then print it with another application that you
know works with your printer. You can also check with your printer
manufacturer to see if you are using the latest printer driver
available.
- If your walk speed is very slow (e.g. 2 frames per second in a very
simple model), you probably have an ATI Mach 32- or 64-bit board,
neither of which supports our Flash Graphics utility. Check under
Rendering in Preferences; if Flash Graphics is grayed out, turn off
devicebitmap for your video board. Here's how:
ATI Mach 32: If you have an ATI Graphics Ultra Pro display card,
you'll need to make an adjustment to its mach32 driver. In the
"win.ini" file located in your Windows directory (open this file with
Windows Notepad), find the section called "mach32" or "mach." Now
find the line "devicebitmap=on" and change it to "devicebitmap=off."
Save the file and restart Windows; Virtus WalkThrough Stereo will run
properly. If there is no devicebitmap statement, you must go to the
Flex Desk control panel in Program Manager. Open the control panel
and select the advanced option. You should see a listing for
devicebitmap. Turn it off, save your changes and restart Windows.
ATI Mach 64: Go to the Flex Desk control panel and hold down the
Control and Shift keys while you type the letters, OPT. When the
dialog box will appears, click OK. A second dialog box will open
that contains the option to turn off devicebitmap. Turn off
devicebitmap, save your changes and then restart Windows.
- In rare instances, you may get a GPF when running Virtus WalkThrough
VRML, so remember to save your work often. When you get a GPF, it
usually means that your display driver does not fully support our Flash
Graphics utility. The VGA and SVGA display drivers supplied with
Windows work properly with Virtus WalkThrough Stereo (provided that your
display adapter supports them). Please consult your Windows manual for
instructions on how to change your video driver.
- Virtus WalkThrough Stereo will work best in the 640x480, 256-colors
mode. Keep in mind that selecting thousands of colors for your display
or choosing a larger resolution (1280x1024, for example) will require
more dynamic memory; these choices will slow your walk speed.
- Only one Virtus WalkThrough Stereo model and library may be open at any
time. When a library is open, the "Library" command under the File menu
will be grayed out (unavailable).
- Models and libraries are organized in two subdirectories, Models and
Library. You must be in the appropriate subdirectories in order to see
them. Models have the .WLK extension (windows) and are located in the
Models subdirectory. They can be accessed by performing a File Open
command from the menu, and then opening the Models subdirectory to see
the list of available models. Libraries have the .WLB extension
(windows) and are located in the Library subdirectory. They can be
accessed by performing a File Library command from the menu, and then
opening the Library subdirectory to see the list of available
libraries. You cannot open a library by doing the File Open command;
you must perform a File Library command. Models and Libraries can be
stored anywhere that you wish.
- You can create your own libraries. Simply copy an object or group of
objects from a Design View, open a Library and then perform an Edit
Paste. See the Reference and Tutorial manuals for more information
about working with libraries.
- Objects may appear to flash on and off as you walk through a file.
Virtus WalkThrough Stereo mathematically calculates each new view as
you are walking. The more complicated your model, the more calculations
are required to render your new position. Occasionally, WalkThrough has
trouble rendering everything 100% correctly; we call these sorting
errors. To improve rendering of objects, first check for overlapping
objects. If there are no intersecting objects, then you may want to
recreate the "flashing" object in a different design view.
- VIRTUS GALLERIES -
$39.00 - Virtus Galleries are sold separately from Virtus applications.
They are extremely useful because they provide many preconstructed 3-D
objects and scenes that you can use in building your own models --
whether it's an item or an entire room. Virtus Galleries are fully
compatible for use with Virtus WalkThrough Stereo (except the textures
aren't accessible).
