  4. For the construction of the Old Hermitage the
  5. foundations and walls of the former houses, that
  6. had stood there since early 18th century, were
  7. used. In the 19th century the building got the
  8. name of the Old Hermitage and was turned into a
  9. depository for objects of art.
  10. The facade facing the embankment is decorated 
  11. in the early classical style. The decoration being 
  12. rather modest, the building serves as a link 
  13. between the smart |Small Hermitage|Custom1|O:2| and the 
  14. |Winter Palace|Custom1|O:1|, and the classically austere 
  15. |Hermitage Theater|Custom1|O:4|. Adjacent to the building of 
  16. the Old Hermitage are the so - called Raphael 
  17. Loggias - a gallery running along the Zimniaya 
  18. Kanavka Embankment (1783 - 94, architect 
  19. Quarenghi), decorated with copies of murals by 
  20. Raphael and his pupils in the Vatican Palace in 
  21. Rome.
