  4. The arch was put up to commemorate the victory 
  5. over Napoleon in the Patriotic War of 1812. After 
  6. the war ended, a wooden triumphal arch was put 
  7. up in the Narvskoye Road to a design by 
  8. Quarenghi for the ceremonial meeting of the 
  9. returning troops. In the 1820s V.Stasov 
  10. developed a new design, that retained the 
  11. general features of the previous one. He 
  12. suggested using brick as the construction 
  13. material, supplemented with copper sheet facing. 
  14. This was an innovation in Russian and West 
  15. European constriction practice.The Narva Arch 
  16. created by Stasov is an imitation of the Old 
  17. Roman triumphal arches. It is topped with the 
  18. Chariot of Glory (the horses performed by 
  19. P.Klodt, the figure of Glory-by S.Pimenov). At the 
  20. foot of the gates there stand four statues of Old 
  21. Russian warriors (sculptors S.Pimenov and 
  22. V.Demuth-Malinovsky).Inside the gates there is a 
  23. room that V.Stasov was planning to use as an 
  24. exhibition hall devoted to the history of the Narva 
  25. Arch construction.
