  6.  The Marble Palace is one of the outstanding 
  7. samples of early Classic architecture. Unlike the 
  8. majority of Petersburg buildings it is faced with 
  9. natural materials-granite and marble. This is 
  10. what gave the Palace its name.
  11.   The building is notable for its discreet decor 
  12. and strict forms. Both in the exterior and interior, 
  13. many decorative elements are faced with marble 
  14. of 32 kinds, the shades chosen with extreme 
  15. precision and delicacy. The facade's central part 
  16. is topped with an attic decorated with two statues 
  17. and compositions of armor performed by the 
  18. famous Russian sculptor F.Shubin.  
  19.    The outbuilding facade facing the garden is 
  20. decorated with a unique plastic frieze devoted to 
  21. the subject of Horse in the Service of Man 
  22. (sculptor P.Klodt), which is 2m high.
  23.    At first the palace was owed by Count G.Oriov. 
  24. After his death in 1783 the palace was acquired 
  25. into the Treasury. It used to be the residence of
