THE TRADING HOUSE
OF THE GUARDS ECONOMIC SOCIETY
Bolshaya Koniushennaya Street, 21 -23
1908 -09. Architect E.Virrich, S.Krichinsky and others
Now a department store
The large territory that is now occupied by a department store, had in the 18th century belonged to
A.Volynsky, one of the leading public figures of PeterÆs period. He was accused of participating in a
conspiracy and executed in 1740. A lane connecting the Bolshaya Koniushennaya street with the
Moika Embankment was named after Volynsky.
In 1907 the Guards Economic Society acquired the lot, and in 1908 the construction of the Trading
House was started. It should be noted that ferro-concrete structures were used for the construction,
which was in those times a novelty in Russian building. The exterior and interior decoration reflected
the interest to Russian classical architecture, characteristic of the 1910s; it is manifested in the use of
order columns, pilasters, as well as the thin spire on top of the corner rotunda.
The design of the layout and spans do not divide it into storeys, but rather into galleries running
around its perimeter and resting upon the columns raising up to the second floor level. The vacant
space inside is saturated with air and light.
