Birzhevaya Square, 4
1805-10. Architect Thomas de Thomon
The building of the Stock Exchange is the
compositional center of the |spit ensemble|Custom1|O:107|. It was
put up as the main port building, the center of
financial and trade operations. The opening
ceremony of the new building (the Stock
Exchange proper was founded by Peter 1 as
early as 1703) took place in 1806. The building is
designed in the style of an antique temple; it is
mounted on a high granite socle and surrounded
by a Doric colonnade. The socle used to house
store-rooms; the central part of the Stock
Exchange is taken up by an enormous hall
spanned with a caissoned cove vault. In facade
decoration sculpture plays the major part, which
is placed in attics and made of Pudost limestone
by S.Sukhanov ( Neptune with Two Rivers and
Navigation with Mercury and Two Rivers). Since
|Naval Museum|Custom1|W:183| - one of the oldest in Russia; it
began as early as 1709 as a store-room for ship
models, earlier kept in the |Admiralty|Custom1|O:8|.
