The city was made capital in 395 A.C. by emperor Constantine I. The city was conquered by the Turks in 1453, and its unofficial name became Istinpolin and, since 1926, officially Istanbul. Istanbul is the largest and most important city in Turkey. Some parts of the city are in Europe and some in Asia.
