- To Whom It May Concern:
-
- The POSIX P1003.12 group is defining a protocol-independent
- Application Program Interface for process-to-process
- communication. POSIX requires its standards to be based on
- existing practice, and two C-language interfaces are being
- standardized by P1003.12. One is the X/Open Transport
- Interface (XTI), and the other is the Sockets interface. The
- group has defined a language-independent specification to
- which both C-language bindings conform, and this enables the
- two bindings to be presented within a common framework.
- Additionally, the group anticipates that non-C-language
- bindings would be developed in accordance with this
- language-independent specification.
-
- The group intends to ballot its draft standard in the
- September 1993 time frame.
-
- It is to everyone's benefit that these APIs are incorporated
- into POSIX. Your help is requested to ensure that they are
- incorporated correctly. You can provide this help by joining
- the ballot group and balloting on the standard.
-
- If you are a sockets user or implementor, you should be aware
- that a significant amount of semantic information has been
- extracted from the Berkeley reference implementation for
- incorporation into the specification. This material should
- be reviewed thoroughly. If you are an XTI expert, the text
- in the P1003.12 draft is essentially that of the XTI CAE
- specification. As the draft goes through the IEEE balloting
- process, changes will certainly be requested. The presence
- of both Sockets experts and XTI experts in the ballot pool is
- essential if these requests are to be handled properly.
-
- Membership in the P1003.12 ballot pool is by invitation. IF
- YOU WISH TO RECEIVE AN INVITATION to join the P1003.12
- ballot pool, either you must already receive POSIX
- invitations to ballot on draft standards or you must REPLY TO
- THIS MESSAGE so I can make sure you get an invitation. Once
- the ballot pool is formed, it is fixed and cannot be added
- to, so reply now.
-
- You DO NOT have to be a member of IEEE to ballot on this
- draft standard, however, you must be a member in order to
- vote "yes." Non-IEEE members are considered parties of
- interest, and if objections are raised by parties of
- interest, we will give them due consideration.
-
- THERE IS A FEE charged by the IEEE to cover the initial
- distribution of the document and all subsequent
- recirculations. The document is currently about 400 pages
- long, and we expect the fee to be approximately $50.
-
- In order to receive an invitation to ballot on IEEE P1003.12,
- reply to this message with your name, address, phone number,
- fax number, email address, and IEEE membership number (if
- applicable).
