  9. The following text appeared anonymously on a notice board at the Irvine
  10. meeting during the "great LIS debate". It is reproduced here for your
  11. enjoyment...although their may be other conclusions possible!

  14.             The Little Standards Group
  15.  
  16. Once a hard-working little standards group lived with a group of international
  17. standards organizations, WG15, SC22, and JTC1.  One day they decided to make a
  18. standard for them all to share.
  19.  
  20. "Who will help me start the standard?" asked the little standards group.
  21. "Not I," said WG15 sheepishly. "Not I" bowed JTC1.  "Not I," grunted SC22.
  22. "Then I will do it myself," said the little standards group.

  24. When she had cut the interface, she asked "Who will help me edit the
  25. standard?" "Not I" growled WG15.  "Not I" smiled JTC1.  "Not I" snorted SC22.
  26. "Then I will do it myself" said the little standards group.

  28. When the standard had been edited, the little standards group asked
  29. "Who will help me ballot the standard?"  "Not I" sighed WG15.  "Not I"
  30. sniffed JTC1.  "Not I" whined SC22.  "Then I will do it myself" said the
  31. little standards group.

  33. Soon the wonderful smell of a freshly baked standard filled the community.
  34. "Now" said the little standards group, "who will help me use the standard?"
  35. "Not so fast," cried WG15. "Before we can use our wonderful standard, we
  36. must first have an LIS for the specification." "Yes!" cried JTC1.  "Absolutely
  37. true." said SC22.  "I can understand that" said the little standards group,
  38. "So, who will help me create this LIS?" "It's your standard, so you must
  39. do it," said WG15. "This is reasonable," said JTC1. "Naturally it is
  40. your task," said SC22.

  42. The little standards group worked on the problem for a while, but was not
  43. able to make progress.  So the little standards group went back to the others.
  44. "I don't think I can do this LIS thing" said the little standards group.
  45. "And I didn't even want to do this LIS thing in the first place.
  46. Even though you want it done, you are unwilling to help.  Why should I do this
  47. thing for you?" asked the little standards group. "You cannot call it a
  48. standard until we say you can." said WG15.  "Regrettably true" said JTC1.
  49. "We agree." chortled SC22.
  50.  
  51. The little standards group said "Fine. Then it will not be a standard for you;
  52. it will be a standard for me. When you are ready, I will work with you to
  53. create this LIS. Until then, I guess you'll just have to do without." So the
  54. little standards group produced useful and portable applications, while WG15,
  55. SC22, and JTC1 hungrily watched.
