- without necessarily targeting the supercomputing folks,
- i wish Posix folks would realise that standards work takes place elsewhere
- as well as within IEEE. still, in an attempt to be constructive,
- i'll try and do a quick summary of what is going on (that i know
- about).
-
- there is a lot of interest in tape formats right now.
- ISO 1001 is up for its 5 yr renewal (its actually 2 yrs late).
- there is talk about some minor tweaks but there is a strategic
- question about whether it should be left alone and commence
- work on a more reasonable alternative. this activity is taking
- place in ISO SC 15. SC 15 is also examining a reference model
- for information interchange using (removeable) media. sort of
- like the OSI reference model for floppies. This work is unrelated
- to the IEEE Mass Storage Reference Model which is work in progress.
-
- there is work taking place in posix 1003.2b for a PAX
- format that is currently based on 1001. this is aimed at serial media
- (actually the word most used by the standards folks is ``sequential
- access'') and seeks to provide cpio'ish+i18n properties. the contact
- here is mbrown@testsys.austin.ibm.com.
-
- there is a consortium called SMS (i think) that is
- trying to establish an industry (PC mainly) standard for backup
- formats. the current draft is a thing called SIDF based on a Novell
- scheme but there is also a Microsoft alternative (MTF). Both have
- problems but both are plausible. the consortium is interested in
- working within the standards process and may well do so in X3B8.
-
- X3B8 is a group that does mag tape standards (8mm etc).
- They have a subgroup (in process of being created) that does
- file system formats work (in standardese, this is ``volume and
- file structure'' work). the contact here is Kirk Wilson
- (kwilson@metrum.com).
-
- X3B11.1 does work on optical disk volume and file structure.
- their current proposal is an ECMA standard (ECMA-167) and is
- currently under ballot for ISO-hood (DIS 13346); the ballot ends
- July 28 this year. there is a bunch of stuff available on this
- including the standard itself (ECMA believes in free distribution
- of its standards), an executive overview, and a programmer's guide.
- the contact is me (andrew@research.att.com).
-
- TC15, the ECMA counterpart of SC 15, is also looking
- at tape formats. i am not sure what is happening exactly,
- except that it is early days and they are interested in close
- coordination with X3B8 and SC 15. the contact here is the
- chair pete bramhall (peteb@hpcpbla.bri.hp.com). tc15 is the
- recommended route to ISO-hood.
-
- there are other small efforts; someone did a tape version
- of DIS 13346 and apparently worked ok. the main issue is to use
- the same structures to record attributes, inodes etc so there
- is interoperability between the standards (or rather, have the
- standards support a (large) common subset of file information.
-
- there is a mailing list of folks interested in the general
- issues of tape/disk file system formats; please email
- andrew@research.att.com about subscribing.
-
- to sum up; there is a lot of activity going on right now,
- and probably a bunch i don't know about (tape is not my kind of media).
- Kirk may hate me for this, but he is probably the best general
- contact for tape format standards.
