  4. meeting in Utrecht, NL:

  6. The POSIX Distributed Security Study Group (DSSG) met for the third
  7. and last time in Utrecht.  This is the end of the six month lifetime
  8. of the study group.  The group continues to be well supported and the
  9. Utrecht meeting brought a few new faces into the group, particularly
  10. European, but also a Canadian.
  11.  
  12. The DSSG made progress with the approach of defining a security
  13. framework for POSIX by mapping the ECMA ``Open Systems Security - A
  14. Security Framework'' onto a POSIX environment with encouraging
  15. results.  The draft framework produced has been used to make an
  16. initial identification of the services requiring Application Program
  17. Interfaces and has mapped known existing or emerging implementations
  18. onto the APIs identified.  Other standards activities in this area
  19. have also been identified.

  21. A white paper titled ``A Distributed Security Framework For POSIX''
  22. has been published presenting the work done to date with the specific
  23. objective of stimulating discussion and comment.

  25. The DSSG has recommended the formation of a new POSIX working group to
  26. produce a ``Guide to Security within Distributed POSIX Systems'' using
  27. the white paper produced by the DSSG as the base document.  A project
  28. authorization request (PAR) for this work has been submitted and will
  29. be considered by the POSIX SEC at the January meeting.  An objective
  30. of this Guide is to produce a definition of the security services and
  31. APIs required throughout POSIX so that the adequacy of future PARs on
  32. meeting the defined security requirements can be assessed.
