- The POSIX.1 committee's charge was to codify existing
- practice, as exemplified by descriptions of widely-used
- implementations of UNIX (4.3BSD and System V system
- documentation; the 1984 /usr/group Standard).

- Since select() was not present in SVR2 and its ancestors,
- it was not a sufficiently well-established part of existing
- practice that the people who wanted it could overcome the
- objections of those who saw a higher priority in minimizing
- changes to existing systems.
