  9. The POSIX.1 committee's charge was to codify existing
  10. practice, as exemplified by descriptions of widely-used
  11. implementations of UNIX (4.3BSD and System V system
  12. documentation; the 1984 /usr/group Standard).

  14. Since select() was not present in SVR2 and its ancestors,
  15. it was not a sufficiently well-established part of existing
  16. practice that the people who wanted it could overcome the
  17. objections of those who saw a higher priority in minimizing
  18. changes to existing systems.
