- >Does anyone out there know the status of POSIX.8, the Networking stuff?
-
- Nearly two years ago, what was known as POSIX Networking, 1003.8, split into
- several different working groups. (Historians will record this as the day
- networking MIRV'ed.) The split was as follows:
-
- 1003.8 Transparent File Access. Current at Draft 5; about to enter ballot.
- Ballot group has closed.
-
- 1003.12 Protocol Independent Interface. Subdivided work into Simple Network
- Interface (SNI) and Detailed Network Interface (DNI), with DNI at
- roughly the level of Sockets/XTI. Still a year or so away from
- ballot on DNI; SNI to follow.
-
- 1003.17 Directory Services API. Draft 2 (perhaps 3 by now). Moving rapidly.
-
- 1224 X.400 interface. At draft 3 (4?). Ballot group has closed; balloting
- should begin soon.
-
- 1237 Remote Procedure Call interface. PAR withdrawn; working group has
- essentially merged, in the US, with the X3T5.5 RPC group.
-
- 1238 Common OSI API and FTAM API. Progressing on core OSI services more
- quickly than on FTAM; working with 1003.17 to ensure a common
- underpinning.
-
- Contact information for each of these groups is available from the IEEE, as
- is information on getting mailings.
-
- All the work of the various TCOS-SS networking groups is coordinated by the
- TCOS-SS Distributed Services Steering Committee, a standards steering
- committee set up by the TCOS-SS SEC for that purpose. The chair of the DSSC
- is Tim Baker, of Loral Space Information Systems in Houston, Tx; e-mail is
- tbaker%nasamail@ames.nasa.gov.
-
- For those who are truly interested in following the progress of IEEE-CS
- standards, I must strongly recommend subscribing to the IEEE-CS Standards
- Status Report, a quarterly which names all currently authorized projects,
- officers (with addresses etc.), document status, and other reports. Very
- valuable.
