  3. The POSIX process-to-process communications working group (P1003.12)
  4. would like to solicit outside comment.

  6. Between November 1990 and January 1991, we asked your opinions as to
  7. whether this working group should
  8.  
  9.         a)      Develop a 3rd interface akin to sockets and XTI,
  10.         b)      Standardize either Berkeley sockets or XTI,
  11.         c)      Standardize both sockets and XTI.
  12.  
  13. The results of the poll indicated that
  14.  
  15.         a)      The working group should not adopt a new third
  16.                 interface
  17.         b)      The working group should adopt both sockets and XTI.
  18.  
  19. These poll results were endorsed by the committee and we are currently
  20. pursuing a plan that provides a single language independent standard
  21. which has two `C' bindings, one for sockets and one for XTI. These
  22. two bindings will constitute our DNI(Detailed Network Interface). We
  23. are also working on an SNI(Simple Network Interface) which views the
  24. network from a far simpler standpoint and operates over the DNI.

  26. The purpose of this mail is to not only feed back the results of the
  27. poll and it's impact on our work, but to ask for further input.
  28. Specifically, we would like comments on perceived problems with either
  29. of the interfaces together with suggestions for additional features
  30. that you believe would be useful to add to one or both of them.
  31.  
  32. Please keep in mind that backwards compatibility is very important
  33. in any change requests proposed.
