  16. Dot three's job is to do test methods for all of the other 1003
  17. standards.  The group's work, whose first parts are now in ballot,
  18. specifies the requirements for OS conformance testing for our industry
  19. and for NIST.  This makes what the balloting group and technical
  20. reviewers are doing, and their schedules, worth watching.  Pay
  21. attention, also, to what comes out of the Steering Committee on
  22. Conformance Testing (SCCT).  Their projects and decisions will be
  23. interesting and important.
  24.  
  25. This was the working group's sixteenth meeting.  As usual, we reviewed
  26. the ballot status of P1003.1 test methods, worked on P1003.2 test
  27. methods, and reviewed steering committee activities.  As before, each
  28. morning we did technical reviews of parts I and II; afternoons were
  29. spent writing assertions for part III.  Participants from the usual
  30. companies attended.  (AT&T, NIST, OSF, Mindcraft, IBM, DEC, HP, Data
  31. General, Cray Research, Unisys, Perennial, and Unisoft Ltd.)

  33. Document structure and some new PARs
  34.  
  35. Currently, our evolving document has two parts: Part I is generic test
  36. methods; Part II is test methods for measuring P1003.1 conformance,
  37. including test assertions; and Part III contains test methods and
  38. assertions for measuring P1003.2 conformance.  (As other P1003
  39. standards evolve, they will become separate activities in the working
  40. group's schedule.)

  42. After the ballot, each part will become a separate standard.  Part I
  43. will be published as IEEE P1003.3; Part II as IEEE P1003.3.1; and Part
  44. III as IEEE P1003.3.2.  To this end, we developed and submitted three
  45. new PARs to the Standards Executive Committee (SEC).  The PAR for
  46. P1003.3 lets Part I apply to all TCOS standards (i.e., POSIX).  The
  47. PAR for P1003.3.1 lets Part II include test methods for P1003.1 and
  48. P1003.1a.  The PAR for P1003.3.2 lets Part III include test methods
  49. for P1003.2.

  61. Ballot status
  62.  
  63. Draft 11 of the current ballot, which was re-circulated to the
  64. (approximately) ninety-member balloting group late in February, closed
  65. balloting March 23.  Of the 65 respondents, 29 approved, 17
  66. disapproved, and 19 abstained.  This meets the two-thirds response
  67. requirement, but falls short of the needed two-thirds approval.
  68. Another re-circulation will probably take place in Fall, 1990.

  70. P1003.2 verification
  71.  
  72. This was our fourth meeting working on a verification standard for the
  73. P1003.2 standard.  The assertion writing and review were done in small
  74. groups.  Some of the assertions were based upon P1003.2 Draft 9.  This
  75. group needs help from the P1003.2 working group in writing test
  76. assertions, but no formal arrangement is in place yet to provide it.

  79. (Unisys), Chair; Lowell Johnson (Unisys) Secretary; and Andrew Twigger
  80. (Unisoft Ltd), Technical Editor.

  82. Steering Committee on Conformance Testing (SCCT)
  83.  
  84. The test-methods steering committee is supposed to alleviate the
  85. increasing dot-three work load all the other, proliferating groups are
  86. creating.  Their job is coordinating the activities of all test-
  87. methods groups, monitoring their conformance to test methods, and
  88. writing Project Authorization Requests (PARs).  Currently, its members
  89. are Roger Martin (NIST, Steering Committee Chair), Anita Mundkur (HP),
  90. Andrew Twigger (Unisoft Ltd), Bruce Weiner (Mindcraft), and Lowell
  91. Johnson (Unisys), but membership will be dynamic, Right now, this
  92. committee is documenting procedures.  Roger Martin is also clarifying
  93. which standards the working group will address.  The Technical
  94. Reviewers will review this work sometime before the next meeting.
