- The May, 1990 UNIX Review "Standards Report" describes an approach being
- taken in the System Administration sub-group in which administration is
- viewed "from the perspective of objects". Quoting from McCarron's article:
-
- P1003.7 will define the following classes of objects: User, Group,
- Device, Filesystem, Process, Queues, Queue Entries, Machine,
- System, Network, Authentication, Authorization, Software, and
- Backup. In addition, the group will define the attributes of
- these classes, the operations that can be performed on the classes,
- and the events that may apply to them.
-
- Speaking as a past administrator, I (like the writer) find the approach
- to be horridly theoretical and inconsistent with existing conventions and
- standard practice. I had assumed that standard setting involved resolving
- inconsistent current practices and approaches, rather than creating one
- from scratch.
-
- Perhaps someone involved in this group can bring us up to date, outline
- the rationale behind this approach, where they intend to take it, etc.
-
- (These sentiments expressed are those of the writer, not necessarily those
- of his organization.)
