  3.        This is to announce the creation of the posix-testing mailing
  4.        list.  The intent is to provide a forum for discussion
  5.        of issues related to testing operating systems for conformance
  6.        to the various POSIX standards and proposed standards
  7.        (IEEE 1003.x and whatever derivative standards may emerge
  8.        from the NIST, ANSI, ISO, and so on).
  9.  
  10.        These issues include problems related to test suites in general,
  11.        testability of various features of the standards, and
  12.        portability of the test suites to the many very different
  13.        POSIX implementations we expect to see in the near future.
  14.        We'll focus on the test suites themselves, rather than on
  15.        the standards to which they test (notably POSIX p1003.3).

  17.        Where discussions stray into general standards issues, I
  18.        will try to redirect them to the appropriate venues, such
  19.        as the comp.std.unix and comp.std.c news groups and the
  20.        posix-ada mailing list.

  22.        POSIX compliance of applications is excluded from the scope
  23.        of this group.

  25.        I anticipate that much of the discussion will focus, for
  26.        now, on problems related to the three generally-available
  27.        test suites, the NIST-PCTS for 1003.1 and the IBM test
  28.        suites for 1003.1 and 1003.2.  The people responsible for
  29.        supporting those test suites may find this an appropriate
  30.        channel for distribution of bug fixes and announcements of
  31.        new releases.

  33.        Submissions will be collected at Mindcraft and redistributed
  34.        in digest form.  I reserve the right to exclude submissions
  35.        that are in bad taste, contain proprietary information, or
  36.        are outside the scope of the list as described here.
