  5. Thanks for an excellent summary.  However, I don't think I ever
  6. said that System III or System V didn't have tar.  I don't have
  7. an archive to check, but that may have been when I posited that
  8. V7 distribution tapes probably did not come in tar format, since
  9. prior to that tar had not been distributed.  System V may have
  10. had tar from the beginning.  I do not remember about System III.

  12. Berkeley 4BSD tapes did come in tar format, I remember; but they
  13. assumed that you had already received your V7/32V tapes, and were
  14. in a different format from the V7/32V tapes.
  15. [ You're evidently referring to some pretty old BSD tapes. -mod ]

  17. Once tar had come out, versions were written which could read
  18. tar distribution tapes under V6 and PWB 1.0.  (PWB was released
  19. outside of AT&T, BTW.)
