- I remember hearing at one point about a decision by AT&T and one or more other
- companies (Sun Microsystems sticks in my head) to move towards a single
- Un*x standard. Does anyone know what is happening with this? Is it all
- waiting on the "posix" stuff? Is there any hope of getting a single
- standard with:
-
- Long file names
- Symbolic links
- Reasonable networking
- Long identifier names in programs
-
- [ POSIX does not deal with most of this: it is strictly a programming
- interface standard. There are related groups dealing with most of these
- issues, however: see my semi-monthly posting on standards groups. -mod ]
-
- I have not been following the various standards efforts. I think it might
- be useful for someone who has to make a posting describing the major
- differences between the different candidates.
-
- [ Appendix A of POSIX is a diff between it and the SVID. There is no
- similar document for it and 4.3BSD. The X/OPEN people have submitted
- a document to P1003.1 on differences between POSIX and X/OPEN. There
- has been no direct comparison document between System V and 4.3BSD for
- several years. -mod ]
