  3. This is the first article in Volume 11 of comp.std.unix (formerly
  4. known as mod.std.unix).

  6. The USENET newsgroup comp.std.unix is also known as the ARPA Internet
  7. mailing list std-unix@sally.utexas.edu.  It is for discussions of
  8. UNIX standards, particularly the IEEE 1003.1 POSIX Trial Use Standard.
  9. The moderator is John S. Quarterman, who is also the institutional
  10. representative of the USENIX Association to the IEEE P1003 Portable
  11. Operating System for Computer Environments Committee (commonly known
  12. as the UNIX Standards Committee).

  18. Permission to post to the newsgroup is assumed for mail to std-unix.
  19. Permission to post is not assumed for mail to std-unix-request,
  20. unless explicitly granted in the mail.  Mail to my personal addresses
  21. will be treated like mail to std-unix-request if it obviously refers
  22. to the newsgroup.

  24. Archives may be found on sally.utexas.edu.  The current volume may
  25. be retreived by anonymous ftp (login anonymous, password guest)
  26. over the ARPA Internet as ~ftp/pub/comp.std.unix.  This is Volume 11.
  27. Volumes 1-10 are filed under the old newsgroup name, mod.std.unix,
  28. as ~ftp/pub/mod.std.unix.v1, ~ftp/pub/mod.std.unix.v2, etc., through
  29. ~ftp/pub/mod.std.unix.v10.  Volume 3 contains the AT&T public domain
  30. getopt(3).  Volume 10 is a special index volume that catalogs Volumes 1-9.

  32. These volumes are strictly for administrative convenience.
  33. Paper copies of them get delivered to the P1003 committee chair
  34. from time to time and several members of the committee follow
  35. the newsgroup on-line.

  37. Also, paper copies will soon be available from the office of the
  38. USENIX Association, in support of the Institutional Representative
  39. from USENIX to the IEEE P1003 committee.  Selection will be by
  40. whole volumes only, not by specific articles.  This service will
  41. be available when sufficient disk space is added to USENIX equipment
  42. in the next few months.

  50. The archives have been somewhat cleaned up in the process of indexing
  51. them.  Irrelevant mail headers have been deleted and "From " (not "From:")
  52. lines in text articles have been escaped or removed to avoid confusing
  53. mail reading programs.  An extra header, "Draft-9:", has been added to
  54. contain the index references by section of 1003.1 Draft 9 or related
  55. topic.  It is hoped that these changes, together with the access
  56. information in Volume 10, will make the archives more useful.

  59. including me) in this newsgroup do not represent any position (including
  60. any draft, proposed or actual, of a standard) of the committee as a
  61. whole or of any subcommittee unless explicitly stated otherwise

  69. PS:  If this article was garbled in transmission to you, that probably
  70. means it passed through a host still running B news 2.10, which doesn't
  71. understand moderated newsgroup names that don't start with "mod.".
