  19. I didn't respond to jsq's poll.  Now that the results have been posted,
  20. I'd like to make my position known.

  22. (1) I didn't think the manner of polling was in any way 
  23.     appropriate.  On the one hand, many individuals
  24.     concerned with IT standards don't get the news 
  25.     groups, on the other hand, many members of the 
  26.     various associations (USENIX, UniForum, IEEE, 
  27.     EUUG, etc.) don't care about standards reports.

  29. (2) I thought the poll questions and methodology were 
  30.     slanted and unscientific.  The fact (noted in
  31.     some comments) that there was no option for 
  32.     no response/don't care/don't know is part of 
  33.     this.  The regression to the mean in most 
  34.     responses is evidence of just how badly 
  35.     designed the poll was.

  37. (3) The paltry number of responses shows that even the 
  38.     majority of POSIX and X3 attendees didn't care 
  39.     about the questions.

  41. (4) I like the snitch reports.  I don't think that either 
  42.     John Quarterman or Jeff Haemer does an adequate job 
  43.     where the postings and the articles in ;login: are 
  44.     concerned.  I would like to see the snitch reports 
  45.     reduced in size to no more than 4-6 pp. in a quarterly
  46.     issue where POSIX is concerned; a page where 1201
  47.     is concerned; a page on WG15; etc.  I think that if
  48.     jsq & jsh are to do a job, it should be to filter 
  49.     the trash before it hits the printer.  Editing is 
  50.     more than merely spelling and punctuation and cute 
  51.     asides.

  53. (5) I'd like to see more on the unmentioned ISO bodies:
  54.     what's gone on at the recent meetings of JTAP,
  55.     for example? [Joint Technical Committee on 
  56.     Application Portability].  They met in Copenhagen
  57.     in February and should be meeting about now in Ottawa.

  59. I think I need yet another newsletter about as much as I 
  60. need another of Dave Yost's wooden nickles.
