  31. The July meeting of \s-1POSIX.0\s0 saw a different approach to the
  32. week's work.
  33. Instead of abiding by the draft agenda,
  34. the group
  35. trashed it
  36. and 
  37. took what might be called a ``fish or cut bait''
  38. approach.
  39. \s-1POSIX.0\s0 looked at each major section
  40. and 
  41. determined whether
  42. or 
  43. not it was ready for
  44. mock ballot, or could be made ready by the October meeting.
  45. .P
  46. Accomplishing the latter required individuals to step up to the
  47. task of editting sections during the meeting, 
  48. with some degree of plenary
  49. review before the week's end.
  50. This required a commitment
  51. from the group at large to refrain from any super ethereal
  52. or 
  53. journalistically based editorial discussions. 
  54. This has sometimes 
  55. been hard to avoid in the past.
  56. The group
  57. stuck to its guns,
  58. however, 
  59. and 
  60. a great deal of headway was made.

  62. The sections within the guide that remain undecided for mock
  63. ballot are:
  64. .DL
  65. .LI
  66. networking,
  67. .LI
  68. security,
  69. .LI
  70. graphics (\s-1GKS\s0, etc.),
  71. .LI
  72. command user
  73. interface,
  74. .LI
  75. system administration,
  76. .LI
  77. fault management.

  80. Should the group decide
  81. that a section is not ready,
  82. we will simply not include it in the
  83. mock ballot. 
  84. It
  85. will be included in the formal
  86. ballot.

  88. As it currently stands,
  89. the group plans to start the mock ballot
  90. early in November,  
  91. bringing all
  92. ballot comments to the January meeting.
  93. This appears to
  94. be very feasible.

  96. The \s-1POSIX.0\s0 project was reviewed at this meeting by 
  97. the \s-1TCOS-SS\s0 Project Management Committee.
  98. The review determined there was the
  99. need for other \s-1TCOS-SS\s0 working groups to better coordinate with 
  100. and 
  101. contribute to the \s-1POSIX.0\s0 guide.
  102. This was mandated through  
  103. an \s-1SEC\s0 resolution.
  104. The greatest concern among the other standards working groups
  105. is ``how in the world are they going to find time to do that.'' 
  106. The groups are already concerned about their current work loads.

  108. I believe that once we go through the preparation at the
  109. October meeting,
  110. and 
  111. get into the mock ballot,
  112. many of the loops that are still open
  113. will be closed.
  114. That is not to say that
  115. there will be no outstanding issues,
  116. but the major concerns
  117. should be laid to rest.
