  7. The IEEE P1003.2 "Shell and Utilities" Working Group is developing a
  8. proposed standard to complement the 1003.1 POSIX standard.  It will
  9. consist of
  10.  
  11.     a shell command language (currently planned to be based on the
  12.     Bourne Shell),
  13.  
  14.     groups of utility programs, or commands,
  15.  
  16.     programmatic interfaces to the shell (system(), popen()) and
  17.     related facilities (regular expressions, file name expansion,
  18.     etc.)
  19.  
  20.     defined environments (variables, file hierarchies, etc) that
  21.     applications may rely upon
  22.  
  23. which will allow application programs to be developed out of existing
  24. pieces, in the UNIX tradition.  The scope of the standard emphasizes
  25. commands and features that are more typically used by shell scripts or
  26. C language programs than those that are oriented to the terminal user
  27. with windows, mice, visual shells, and so forth.

  29. The group is currently seeking proposals for groupings of commands that
  30. may be offered by implementors.  As groups are identified, command
  31. descriptions will be solicited.  There is no requirement that the commands
  32. be in System V or BSD today, but they should realistically be commands 
  33. that are commonly found in most existing implementations.

  35. Meetings are normally held in conjunction with the 1003.1 group and
  36. have a large membership overlap.  The next meeting is 12/8/86, and
  37. possibly the morning of the 9th, in Atlantic City.  Future meetings
  38. will generally be held on the day or two preceding 1003.1.
