  1. The discussion has been interesting and has brought up some topics,
  2. such as what case insensitivity means in non-English languages, that
  3. many of the readers were evidently unaware of.  However, it's getting
  4. a bit out of hand.

  6. IEEE P1003.1 is interested in promoting portability of applications
  7. by defining a UNIX-like operating system interface.  Any major change
  8. from a feature of *every* variant of UN*X, such as case-sensitive
  9. file names (really, filenames as uninterpreted byte strings), needs
  10. major justification before being considered.  So further assertions
  11. of the form "I want it because I like it" are not of interest.  It
  12. would be most interesting to see the results of a survey on user
  13. reaction to case sensitivity or insensitivity, but this newsgroup
  14. isn't the place to conduct such a survey, and it's not clear that
  15. the results would be relevant to 1003.1 anyway (what does case
  16. mean in Japanese or Finnish)?
