  26. I (John Quarterman) am the Institutional Delegate from USENIX to the
  27. IEEE 1003 committee (see below) and one of my functions as such is to
  28. get comments from the USENIX membership and the general public to the
  29. committee.  One of the ways I try to do that is by moderating this
  30. newsgroup (currently known as mod.std.unix, eventually as comp.std.unix).
  31. I'm also currently on the USENIX Board of Directors.

  41. They publish a newsletter called CommUNIXations.  The May/June 1986
  42. issue contains a report by Heinz Lycklama (the /usr/group Institutional
  43. Delegate to IEEE 1003) on the /usr/group Technical Committee working
  44. groups which met in February 1986 on the areas of Networking,
  45. Internationalization, Graphics, Realtime, Database, Performance,
  46. and the proposed new group on Security.  I will post contact
  47. information for these working groups as taken from that article
  48. in a later mod.std.unix article.

  50. The annual Uniforum Conferences are sponsored by /usr/group
  51. and feature a large trade show.  The next one is in D.C.
  52. at the same time as the next USENIX Conference.  USENIX
  53. and /usr/group have held several concurrent conferences
  54. in the past and will probably do so in the future.

  57. Both USENIX and /usr/group also have tutorials at their
  58. conferences and both sponsor other meeting activities
  59. in addition to their regular conferences.

  86. The IEEE 1003 Portable Operating System for Computer Environments Committee
  87. is sometimes known colloquially as the UNIX Standards Committee.
  88. They have recently produced the 1003.1 "POSIX" Trial Use Standard.

  108. such as a year.  The current target for a Full Use Standard is Fall 1987.

  110. the International Standards Organization (ISO) arena.

  212. a document intended to promote the writing of portable facilities.
  213. (They now have member computer manufacturers from outside Europe.)
