  32. The charter of SOC.CULTURE.IRANIAN is to serve as a discussion group
  33. for issues related to Iran and Iranian things. This monthly posting of
  34. frequently asked questions (FAQ), with answers, is intended to prevent
  35. the recurrence of specific questions or types of questions that are
  36. either unanswerable, or are asked seemingly weekly. The information
  37. contained here is based on the best postings from the net on these
  38. subjects, and thanks are due to the netters who provided them.
  39. Information from international sources would be a welcome addition.

  121.     1q. Where is the Anonymous FTP site for soc.culture.iranian?
  122.         How do I access it? What's available there?
  123.  
  124.     1a. Tehran.Stanford.EDU [36.28.0.189] is the main ftp site
  125.         for soc.culture.iranian. A lot of useful information can be
  126.         found by browsing through it. Whenver anonymous ftp is
  127.         mentioned in this file, it is implied anonymous ftp to
  128.         tehran.Stanford.EDU. Please use the following guidelines when
  129.         using the ftp service:
  130.  
  131.             o use login name anonymous
  132.             o enter your e-mail address as password
  133.             o in order not to increase the load on tehran, try to use
  134.               this service after business hours, Pacific Standard Time
  135.  
  136.         If you don't have access to ftp, you can get all the above via
  137.         e-mail. Here's how it works:
  138.  
  139.             o send mail to sci-ftp@tehran.stanford.edu and in the
  140.               Subject line write: "send info" (without the quotes).
  141.               You will receive a mail from Mr. Background (daemon) at
  142.               tehran with all the information and list of the files.
  143.               (but PLEASE do not reply to daemon@tehran)
  144.             o After you choose the file you want, e.g. gerdsooz.c just
  145.               send mail to sci-ftp with subject line: "send gerdsooz.c" 
  146.               and Tehran will send you a uuencoded file, gerdsooz.c
  147.               All you need to do is, save your mail in a file and then
  148.               run uudecode filename.
  149.             o There is another feature that may be helpful. The list
  150.               of files are too long and annoying, so Farhad has
  151.               created a catalog of lists, to get the catalog menu,
  152.               you use: "send info catalog"
  153.               then you can choose from the menu of catalogs.
  154.               i.e.  if you want a list of Noor publications then you
  155.               use: "send list Noor"
  156.             o remember capitalization is very important and All
  157.               catalogs start with a capital letter (but there can be
  158.               more than one capital letter, except pub).

  221.                   Jalaali and Gregorian calendars into each other.
  222.                   The first is official in Iran (and surrounding areas
  223.                   like Afghanistan, Central Asian Republics and
  224.                   Kurdish Mesopotamia) and the second in the west. The
  225.                   Jalaali calendar is named after Jalaal-ol-Din
  226.                   Malek-shaah-e Saljuqi by the great Iranian
  227.                   poet/mathematician Omar Khayyam who re-worked it in
  228.                   late fifth century hejri.  The Gregorian calendar is
  229.                   named after Pope Gregory XIII who introduced the
  230.                   latest changes in the calendar in 1582 AD. The two
  231.                   have more or less the same year-length, but are
  232.                   based on completely different systems. They differ
  233.                   in both structures and in the way they deal with
  234.                   leap years.
