  34. 1)    The alt.backrubs archive is at the ftp site ftp.csd.uwo.ca
  35. whose numeric address is 129.100.11.252.  Please connect during
  36. off-peak hours (between 7pm and 7am), the server's timezone is 5 hours
  37. behind GMT (it is in Ontario, Canada).  The files are in the directory
  38. pub/news/alt.backrubs.  I now have ownership of the directory and
  39. files in it.  I had to choose an expiry date for the files so I chose
  40. 31 Dec 1996.

  42.     The files at the ftp site have been compressed with the
  43. standard Unix compress program.  All transfers must be in binary form
  44. and you'll need some kind of uncompress to read them (the GNU unzip,
  45. gunzip, works fine).  The file `00README' in the archive contains
  46. information about where you can obtain an uncompress program.  The
  47. files are in mailbox format (so you can read them as ordinary text
  48. files or use any standard mail reader to treat them as a list of mail
  49. messages).

  52. alt.backrubs and every 30 days to news.answers and alt.answers, with
  53. the help of Jonathan I. Kamens's post_faq program (patchlevel 5).

  56. Subject: The Archive Files
  57. 2)    The alt.backrubs archive is my own collection of postings and
  58. is far from complete.  Our site didn't receive alt.backrubs for the
  59. first few months and other connections weren't terribly reliable.
  60. Although the archive is chock full of interesting and informative
  61. postings I can't guarantee that anyone will find what they want there.

  63.     I saved these posts because I was interested in them.  I
  64. haven't even saved all the postings about topics I'm interested in --
  65. this is especially true of the suggestions for books.  I haven't saved
  66. anything about the old backrubs exchange programme and very little
  67. from the seemingly endless arguments about sex and massage.  There is
  68. an entry below about the new backrubs exchange programme.

  70.     I have created a list of categories of files in the archive.
  71. That's the closest thing there is to an index now.  The category list
  72. is in the file `Archive.Index'.

  76. 3)    There hasn't been a frequently asked questions list (FAQL)
  77. posted to alt.backrubs for a long time.  Copies of all FAQLs are in
  78. the archive.

  81. start learning about recreational massage.

  85. 4)    The backrub exchange has been restarted.  There are two files
  86. in the archive about it: the announcement and the most current update.
  87. The files are named exchange.prog and exchange.update.

  90. list.  In the announcement he wrote:

  103. 5)    I'd be very grateful if someone would create an index to the
  104. postings in the files.  Also, please send me mail if you find something
  105. wrong with the files.

  108. Subject: Where is the `List Of Files'?
  109. 6)    They've been moved into a different posting.  This is so the
  110. date on this post won't change everytime the list changes.  If you are
  111. reading alt.backrubs with a threaded newsreader then the list will be
  112. the next article in the thread.  
  113.     That posting also includes a list of categories of files in
  114. the archive.  The file `Archive.Index' in the archive contains the
  115. same list of categories *and* files within those categories.  It's
  116. formatted to be easy to search automatically.

  119. Subject: What's New
  120. 7)    I changed John M. Twilley's address to reflect his unfortunate
  121. change in circumstances.  I split the `head&neck.ache' file into two
  122. files named (surprise, surprise!) `head.ache' and `neck.ache'.  I
  123. inserted mention of the `index' in sections 2 and 6.  I made minor
  124. editing changes to the first paragraph of section 2.  I changed
  125. `compress' in section 1 to `the standard Unix ...' and pointed readers
  126. to the 00README file in the archive for more info.
  127.     I added `Subject:' lines at the beginning of every section to
  128. make the most more convenient for people reading with suitably
  129. equipped newsreaders.  If you find this terribly offensive to your
  130. aesthetic sensibilities please tell me -- I might remove them.
