  9. What is the Internet Resource Guide                
  10. ----------------------------------

  12. The Internet Resource Guide was published by the NSF Network Service Center 
  13. (NNSC) as a guide to resources on the Internet.  These resources include 
  14. facilities such as supercomputers, databases, libraries or specialized 
  15. programs on the Internet which are available to large numbers of users.  Each
  16. entry in the guide contains a description of the resource, a description of 
  17. who may use the resource, the type of access supported (email, ftp, telnet),
  18. and contact points for further information such as a phone number, email 
  19. address and name of a contact person where appropriate.  Each listing is 
  20. approximately one page of text.

  22. The categories of resources are (1) Computational Resources, (2) Library 
  23. Catalogs, (3) Archives, (4) White Pages (information about users), (5) 
  24. Networks, (6) Network Information Centers and (7) Miscellaneous.

  26. On April 1, 1993, the Guide was moved to the InterNIC Directory and Database 
  27. Services provided by AT&T and is in the process of being incorporated into 
  28. the InterNIC Directory of Directories.

  32. What is the InterNIC Directory of Directories
  33. --------------------------------------------

  35. The InterNIC Directory of Directories is being built by AT&T as an online 
  36. directory of resources and services available to the Internet.  Two types of 
  37. entries are supported in the Directory, Standard and Expanded.  Standard 
  38. entries are pointers to the resource or service. They contain a short 
  39. description, a list of descriptive keywords, additional contact information, 
  40. and, optionally, access information.  Standard entries run about 1/2 page 
  41. long (or a little longer than 24x80 terminal screen).  Expanded entries may 
  42. be much longer to accommodate comprehensive description and access 
  43. information.

  45. The current resource categories include:
  46.  
  47.     Anonymous ftp archive site
  48.     Computing center (including supercomputing center)    
  49.     Communications document archive (e.g. RFCs, FYIs, STDs, etc.)
  50.     Database Server
  51.     Dictionary, encyclopedia
  52.     Directory
  53.     General archive
  54.     Information by subject (provide the subject)
  55.     Internet introductory material
  56.     Internet registration service center
  57.     Library Mailing list, bulletin board, newsgroup
  58.     Multimedia database
  59.     Network information center (NICs)
  60.     Network operation center (NOCs)
  61.     Network provider
  62.     Networked information resource server site (e.g. WAIS servers)
  63.     Networked information resource tool (Information on specific tools
  64.                                          like gopher, WWW, etc.)
  65.     Newsletter  (electronic newsletters)
  66.     Publication (online publication subscription services)
  67.     Security response center
  68.     Software repository
  69.     Standards organization
  70.     Training program (Internet related seminars, classes, etc.)

  72. Transition of the Internet Resource Guide to the Directory of Directories    
  73. -------------------------------------------------------------------------

  75. During 1993 the Internet Resource Guide will be incorporated into the 
  76. InterNIC Directory of Directories.  The first step was to move the ASCII text
  77. chapters into the Directory as they currently appear in the Guide so that 
  78. these entries are available to users of the Directory.

  80. No more new or updated entries will be accepted for the Guide, but if any 
  81. are submitted, BBN Inc. will send them to the InterNIC Directory and Database
  82. Administrator.  The Directory and Database Administrator will contact the 
  83. provider about putting the entry into the new Directory of Directories 
  84. format.

  86. The IRG will remain intact for at least one year.

  100. If you are part of an organization that maintains a facility or service 
  101. that should be included in the Directory, please send a message to:

  105. and we will send a template for you to use to submit your information. We 
  106. will edit the submission and check it with you before we include it in the 
  107. Directory.  If you know anyone who might want to make a contribution, please 
  108. pass on this message or send us a note giving us the name of a contact person.

  110. The request form for placing an entry in the Directory of Directories may 
  111. also be obtained from host ds.internic.net via anonymous ftp. Issue the 
  112. following commands:

  115.    get dirofdir-request.template

  118. in the body of the message:

  139. How to Get the Directory of Directories and The Internet Resource Guide

  142. Accessing the Directory of Directories
  143. --------------------------------------
  144. You may use WAIS, anonymous FTP, gopher or electronic mail to access the
  145. InterNIC Directory of Directories.  All entries are in plain text form. Paper
  146. copies of the Directory are not available at this time.

  148. Using WAIS
  149. ----------
  150.  
  151. To access the Directory using WAIS, telnet to ds.internic.net and login with 
  152. userid "wais."  No password is required.  An online tutorial and a help
  153. interface are available to new users of the Directory and Database Services 
  154. WAIS client.

  156. Using anonymous FTP
  157. -------------------
  158. FTP to host ds.internic.net.  The Directory of Directories is stored in the
  159. "resource/" directory as ASCII text files in resource category subdirectories
  160. (e.g. NIC, ftpsite, compcenter, archive, etc.).  The Internet Resource Guide 
  161. entries will have the same file names as they had in the Guide directory 
  162. (e.g.  section1-1.txt).  Each chapter in the Guide is stored in the following
  163. subdirectories:

  165.    Chapter 1:  compcenter
  166.    Chapter 2:  library
  167.    Chapter 3:  archive
  168.    Chapter 4:  directory
  169.    Chapter 5:  provider
  170.    Chapter 6:  nic
  171.    Chapter M:  nirserver

  173. Entries in the new Directory of Directories format have file names based on 
  174. an abbreviation of the name of the resource.

  176. Using electronic mail
  177. ---------------------
  178. Entries in the Directory may also be obtained through electronic mail by 
  179. sending a message to mailserv@ds.internic.net.  To retrieve individual files,
  180. include the FILE command in the message body.  FILE has the following format:
  181.  
  182.     FILE - This command initiates a file transfer by email for each file 
  183.            specified.  It requires a fully qualified pathname for each 
  184.            desired file.

  186.            examples:  file /ftp/resources/newsletter/SimpleTimes.b
  187.                       file /ftp/resources/compcenter/section1-1.txt

  189. A directory list may be obtained by including the LS (or DIR) command which 
  190. has the following format:
  191.  
  192.     LS/DIR - This command initiates a directory listing for each directory 
  193. specified.  It requires a fully qualified pathname for each desired directory
  194. listing.

  198. A users guide for the Directory and Database Services Mailserver may be

  202. Accessing the Internet Resource Guide
  203. -------------------------------------
  204. The Guide may be accessed using anonymous FTP, WAIS, Gopher or electronic 
  205. mail in plain-text form and anonymous FTP or electronic mail in PostScript 
  206. form.  Recipients can print the pages locally and insert them into a 
  207. looseleaf binder which they can update when they receive new material. Paper
  208. copies are not available at this time.

  210. Using FTP
  211. ---------
  212. FTP to host ds.internic.net and cd to /resource-guide.  The IRG is stored in 
  213. the same directory structure as it appeared on nnsc.nsf.net.
  214.  
  215. Using WAIS
  216. ----------
  217. The IRG may also be scanned using WAIS by telneting to ds.internic.net and 
  218. logging in with userid "wais".  No password is required.  When you receive 
  219. the "search->" prompt, issue the command:
  220.  
  221.    database resource-guide
  222.  
  223. to point you to the IRG database.  An online tutorial and a help interface 
  224. are available to new users of the Directory and Database Services WAIS 
  225. client.

  227. Using Electronic Mail
  228. ---------------------
  229. The files which make up the IRG may also be obtained through electronic mail 
  230. by sending a message to mailserv@ds.internic.net. To retrieve individual

  255. Directory of Directories:

  264. Internet Resource Guide and updates to the Directory of Directories.

  266. There were formerly three mailing lists available for updates to the Internet
  267. Resource Guide maintained by the NNSC.

  269.     1) irg-txt:  updates via email in PostScript format
  270.     2) irg-ps:   updates via email in plain-text (ASCII) format
  271.     3) irg-ftp:  announced via email when new entries available via FTP
  272.  
  273. These mailing lists have been taken over by Directory and Database Services 
  274. and merged into dirofdirs-announce.  Requests to be added to any of these 
  275. lists will be forwarded by the NNSC to Directory and Database Services and 
  276. will be added to dirofdirs-announce.
