  7. This README describes an OS/2 device driver (SONY535.ADD) for the
  8. Sony CDU-531 and Sony CDU-535 series of CD-ROM drives.  The device driver
  9. supports the Sony CDU-531, 535, 6150, 6201, 6205, 6251, 7201 and
  10. 7205 CD-ROM drives attached to a Sony CDB-240 series (or compatible)
  11. host adapter.

  14. Supported Features
  15. ------------------
  16. The OS/2 Sony CD-ROM device driver (SONY535.ADD) supports the
  17. following features:
  18.  
  19.   * Reads data from CD-ROM discs conforming to the High Sierra/ISO-9660
  20.     file formats.
  21.  
  22.   * Plays audio from standard audio CDs or mixed mode CD-ROM discs
  23.     containing both data and audio
  24.  
  25.   * Single session photo CD
  26.  
  27.   * Reads data from Mode 2 Form 1 or Mode 2 Form 2 sector formats
  28.  
  29.   * MMPM/2 CD Audio Player
  30.  
  31.   * Software lock, unlock and eject
  32.  
  33.   * Data transfer via software polling or interrupts

  36. THIS CD-ROM DEVICE DRIVER IS DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH THE OS/2 2.1 PRODUCT
  37. AND IS GOVERNED BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE OS/2 PROGRAM LICENSE

  48. Before starting the installation procedure, you should unzip the
  49. files included in the SONY535.ZIP file and copy them to a diskette.
  50. The diskette you created will be referred to as the "Sony CD-ROM Device
  51. Driver Diskette" in the following installation instructions.

  53. The following files are included in the SONY535.ZIP file:
  54.  
  55.    SONY535.ADD  - OS/2 device driver for Sony CD-ROM drive
  56.    S535CDB.DDP  - Installation profile
  57.    README.535   - This README file.

  61. Installation if OS/2 2.1 is already installed on your fixed disk
  62. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  63.  
  64. 1. Run the Device Driver installation program
  65.  
  66.    a. Open the OS/2 System folder on the desktop.
  67.    b. Open the System Setup folder.
  68.    c. Open Device Driver Install.
  69.    d. Insert the "Sony CD-ROM Device Driver Diskette"
  70.    e. Select Install
  71.    f. Select the device driver to install from the list
  72.    g. Select OK.
  73.  
  74.    (Note: You do not need to reboot OS/2 before starting step 2 below).

  76. 2. After the Device Driver Installation is complete, you must run
  77.    Selective Install to install the files for the OS/2 CD-ROM Device
  78.    Manager and OS/2 CD-ROM File System.

  80.    a. Open the OS/2 System folder on the desktop.
  81.    b. Open the System Setup folder.
  82.    c. Open Selective Install
  83.    d. Select the CD-ROM Device Support check box
  84.    e. Select OK
  85.    f. Scroll to the bottom of the CD-ROM device list table and
  86.       select the choice OTHER
  87.    g. Select OK
  88.    h. Select the OK push button to proceed from the System Configuration
  89.       screen to the OS/2 Setup and Installation window
  90.    i. Select Install
  91.    j. When prompted to do so, insert the numbered installation diskettes
  92.       or installation CD-ROM from the OS/2 2.1 product.

  95. 3. If you have changed the base I/O port address on your CD-ROM
  96.    host adapter card you must edit your CONFIG.SYS file and add
  97.    modify the /P:nnnn parameter on the BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD statement in
  98.    your CONFIG.SYS file.  Refer to the "Sony Device Driver Parameters"
  99.    section below.

  102. 4. Shut down and restart your system

  107. Installation from the CD-ROM version of OS/2 2.1
  108. ------------------------------------------------
  109.  
  110. 1.  Make a copy of the OS/2 2.1 diskette labeled "Diskette 1"
  111.  
  112. 2.  Copy the file SONY535.ADD from the "Sony CD-ROM Device Driver
  113.     Diskette" to the root directory on the copy of the OS/2 2.1 Diskette 1.
  114.  
  115.     (Note: If there is not enough room on the copy of OS/2 2.1
  116.      Diskette 1, then delete the file IBM2SCSI.ADD.  If you delete
  117.      IBM2SCSI.ADD, you must also edit the CONFIG.SYS file and delete
  118.      the line BASEDEV=IBM2SCSI.ADD)

  120. 3.  Edit the CONFIG.SYS file located on the copy of Diskette 1.
  121.     At the end of the file, add the following statement.
  122.  
  123.        BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD  /P:nnn
  124.  
  125.           where "/P:nnn" is the base I/O port address selected on the
  126.           CD-ROM host interface card.  The default base I/O port address
  127.           for the Sony CDB-242 interface card is 340h, so the statement
  128.           would appear as follows if the card is set to address 340h:

  131.        BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD  /P:340

  135. 4.  Begin the installation by inserting the Installation Diskette
  136.     into drive A and restarting the system.  When prompted to insert
  137.     Diskette 1, insert the copy that you modifed.
  138.  
  139. 5.  When the System Configuration screen is displayed during installation,
  140.     the CD-ROM Device Support field will display "None".  Do not modify
  141.     the choice and continue with the installation.
  142.  
  143. 6.  After installation is complete, and you have rebooted your system,
  144.     you will not be able to access your CD-ROM drive.  This is due
  145.     to a defect in the OS/2 2.1 install program.  To access your
  146.     CD-ROM drive, perform the following steps:
  147.  
  148.     a. Copy the following files from the OS/2 2.1 Diskette 1
  149.        to the drive which OS/2 was installed.
  150.        (Note: the example assume C:, change if different)
  151.  
  152.        COPY A:OS2CDROM.DMD C:\OS2
  153.        COPY A:CDFS.IFS     C:\OS2
  154.  
  155.     b. Edit the CONFIG.SYS file on drive which OS/2 was installed
  156.        and add the following statements to the end of the file:
  157.        (Note: the example assume C:, change if different)
  158.  
  159.        DEVICE=C:\OS2\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q
  160.        IFS=C:\OS2\CDFS.IFS /Q
  161.  
  162.     c. Shut down and reboot the system
  163.

  165. 7.  You will need to run Selective Install to copy over some remaining
  166.     system files.
  167.  
  168.     a. Open the OS/2 System folder on the desktop.
  169.     b. Open the System Setup folder.
  170.     c. Open Selective Install
  171.     d. Select the CD-ROM Device Support check box
  172.     e. Select OK
  173.     f. Scroll to the bottom of the CD-ROM device list table and
  174.        select the choice OTHER
  175.     g. Select OK

  187. 1. Install the OS/2 2.1 product from the diskettes
  188.  
  189. 2. Go to the section above titled "Installation if OS/2 2.1 is already
  190.    installed on your fixed disk".

  199. This section lists the parameters which are supported for the
  200. Sony CD-ROM device driver.  The parameters can be changed by modifying
  201. the BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD line in config.sys.  It is recommended
  202. to change the transfer mode from it default, software polling transfer,
  203. to software interrupt transfer.  This will help lower the CPU utilization
  204. of CD-ROM applications, enabling better performance for other tasks
  205. while the CD-ROM drive is being accessed.  See the /I parameter below.

  208. For the SONY535.ADD device driver, the syntax for the line in config.sys
  209. is as follows:
  210.  
  211.    BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD [/P:nnn] [I:nn] [/U:d,d...] [/V]

  216.      Specifies the base I/O port address of the interface card.
  217.      The value must be the same number as the port address selected
  218.      by the jumper on the host interface card.
  219.

  223.      Specifies the interrupt request (IRQ) channel number.  This must
  224.      match the value specified on the jumper setting on the interface
  225.      card. If this parameter is not specified, the device driver will use
  226.      software polling transfer.
  227.  
  228.      Note: Some Sony host adapter cards did not ship with the plastic
  229.            jumper switch to select the IRQ channel on the IRQ jumper block.
  230.            You must obtain and install the plastic jumper switch to enable
  231.            the IRQ channel.

  236.      Specifies the drive unit number which the Sony CD-ROM drive is
  237.      set to.  The value of d must be set to 0,1,2 or 3.  If more than
  238.      one Sony CD-ROM drive is attached to the adapter, this parameter
  239.      must be specified. If only one CD-ROM drive is attached to the
  240.      adapter, and this parameter is not specified, then the default unit
  241.      id used by the driver is 0.

  246.      The device driver will display the device driver revision level
  247.      and CD-ROM product information at boot time.

  251. Sony CDU-535 Device Driver Parameter Examples

  254. 1.  Sony CD-ROM drive attached to Sony CDB-240 series host adapter:

  256.     For example, if the Sony host adapter is set to a base I/O port
  257.     address of 360, the line in config.sys should be:
  258.

  262. 2.  Sony CD-ROM drive attached to Sony CDB-240 series host adapter.

  264.     If the Sony CD-ROM drive is attached to the Sony host adapter at
  265.     base I/O port address of 360h, and the driver is operating in interrupt
  266.     mode at IRQ channel 5, the line in your config.sys should be:

  271. 3.  Multiple Sony CD-ROM drives daisy chained to Sony CDB-240 series
  272.     host adapter
  273.  
  274.     For example, if two Sony CD-ROM drives are daisy chained from
  275.     the Sony host adapter with the first drive set to drive unit 0
  276.     and the second set to drive unit 1, the line in config.sys
  277.     should appear as follows:

  285. | Known Problems   |
  286. --------------------
  287.  
  288. 1.  Slow transfer rate on some 386 class machines.
  289.  
  290.     We are investigating a problem with slow transfer rates on some
  291.     386 class machines.  The transfer rate on those machines only
  292.     achieves a transfer rate of 75K/sec, instead of the 150KB/sec which
  293.     the drive supports.

  300. 1. If you are not able to access the CD-ROM drive:
  301.  
  302.  
  303.    a.  Add the /V parameter switch to the BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD statement
  304.        in your CONFIG.SYS file.  For example:
  305.  
  306.           BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD /P:340 /V
  307.  
  308.  
  309.        After rebooting, the device driver will display the list of
  310.        drives it has identified.   For example:
  311.  
  312.          IBM OS/2 SONY535.ADD 1.00
  313.          SONY    CDROM CDU-535-01 1.0a  Port:340  Units: 0 IRQ:Polled

  316.        If no units were detected, the following message is displayed:
  317.

  322.        If no units were detected, see step 1b below.

  327.    b.  Make sure the Base I/O Port Address specified by the /P parameter
  328.        in the config.sys file matches the Base Port Address selected
  329.        with the DIP switch on the interface card.
  330.  
  331.        The default Base I/O Port Address for the Sony interface card
  332.        is address 340h.  If you have changed the Base I/O Port Address on
  333.        the card, you must change the /P parameter on the BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD
  334.        statement in config.sys.
  335.  
  336.        For example, if you changed the Base I/O Port Address to 360h, the
  337.        statement in config.sys should be as follows:
  338.  
  339.            BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD /P:360

  342.    c.  Make sure all the required files to operate the CD-ROM drive have
  343.        been installed.  You should have the appropriate BASEDEV=
  344.        statement in CONFIG.SYS for your CD-ROM device driver.  You
  345.        should also have the following statements for the CD-ROM system
  346.        files in your config.sys:

  349.           DEVICE=C:\OS2\OS2CDROM.DMD /Q
  350.           IFS=C:\OS2\CDFS.IFS /Q

  355.        If you do not have the above statements in your config.sys, you
  356.        must use the OS/2 2.1 Selective Install to install the CD-ROM
  357.        support files.

  361. 2. If the performance of background OS/2 tasks seems slow when the CD-ROM
  362.    drive is accessed.  Or, if the performance of the MMPM/2 Software Motion
  363.    Video clips seems slow or jerky.
  364.  
  365.    a.  The SONY535.ADD device driver should be run using the Software
  366.        Interrupt transfer option to enable the best performance in OS/2.
  367.        The IRQ (interrupt request) channel assigned by the jumper on the
  368.        interface card must match the the interrupt channel specified using
  369.        the /I parameter on the BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD statement in config.sys.
  370.        You must assign an IRQ channel that is not being used by any other
  371.        interface cards on your computer.
  372.  
  373.        For example, to enable the Software Interrupt transfer option for
  374.        IRQ channel 5, the statement in config.sys should be as follows:
  375.  
  376.           BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD  /P:340  /I:5
  377.  
  378.  
  379. 3.  If the drive letter assigned to the CD-ROM drive under OS/2 is
  380.     different than the drive letter assigned under DOS.
  381.  
  382.     The CD-ROM drive is assigned the next available drive
  383.     letter after drive letters have been assigned for the
  384.     floppy drives and fixed disk drives.
  385.  
  386.     The drive letter is also assigned after any installable block
  387.     device drivers which are located in config.sys before the
  388.     DEVICE=C:\OS2\OS2CDROM.DMD statement (i.e. DEVICE=C:\OS2\VDISK.SYS).
  389.  
  390.     There is currently no mechanism in OS/2 for assigning a specific
  391.     drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.  The drive letter assignment
  392.     under DOS can be controlled by using the /L switch on MSCDEX.EXE
  393.     command line.

  410. boot time by adding the /V switch to the BASEDEV=SONY535.ADD line
  411. in config.sys.  For example, the following line may be displayed at boot
